Hotel Seehof

Hotel Seehof is a family-run property positioned directly on the harbor of Unteruhldingen on Lake Constance. It is a hotel that emphasizes lake views, convenient access to regional attractions, and comfort.

Location

The hotel’s strongest feature is its location. It sits right on the lakefront promenade beside the small harbor, with views over the water and the marina. The ferry terminal is only steps away, making it simple to take day trips across Lake Constance to destinations such as Meersburg or Friedrichshafen.

The fabulous Pfahlbauten open-air museum, known for its reconstructed stilt houses from the Stone and Bronze Ages, is also within walking distance. For those arriving by car, the hotel provides free parking, though the number of spaces is limited. Its position makes it easy to combine a stay here with excursions to Mainau Island, Meersburg, or Konstanz.

Public Spaces

Hotel Seehof’s public spaces are practical and centered around its lakeside terrace. The terrace serves as both a dining area and a place to relax, offering views across the harbor and shoreline. Inside, the public areas are simple: a restaurant, bar, and small reception. Guests tend to use the terrace for breakfast or evening drinks, taking advantage of the lakefront setting.

Rooms

Rooms are traditionally styled and vary in size. Standard amenities include seating areas, televisions, desks, and private bathrooms with showers. Some rooms, including mine, feature balconies or terraces with lake views, which are a significant draw for travelers who want to enjoy the scenery.

While many rooms feel updated and well maintained, air conditioning is not consistently available throughout the property. Instead, ceiling fans and open balcony doors provide ventilation. When I visited in September, that was not a concern, as the cool lake breezes were easily available by opening the door to the terrace.

The rooms are clean and comfortable, as I expect in a German hotel. Mine had two single beds with the usual duvet. I did appreciate both a small and a large pillow for each bed, which is helpful to those of us who sleep with a small pillow over our heads.

Hotel Seehof bathroom

Bathrooms are functional, offering showers, mirrors with good lighting, and basic toiletries. The sink, while lovely, was designed by someone who does not quite understand how water works. It is so shallow that I challenge you to use it and not spill water out of it.

Special Features

Hotel Seehof distinguishes itself through its boutique scale and direct connection to the lake. The harbor-side setting means many rooms and the terrace provide a strong sense of place.

Other features include balcony rooms and pet-friendly policies. I arrived at the hotel by bike, and the hotel has a garage for storing your bike that is equipped with lockers where you can both store and charge your e-bike’s battery. This was a unique and helpful feature.

Food and Dining

Breakfast is included and is a highlight of the stay. It is served buffet-style and offers a mix of fresh breads, cheeses, meats, fruit, cereals, and eggs (upon request). Weather permitting, breakfast can be enjoyed on the terrace overlooking the water, which enhances the experience.

The on-site restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, serving both regional specialties and some international options. Guests frequently remark on the convenience of dining on site after a day of sightseeing. Terrace dining in the evening is particularly appealing during the summer months.

Facilities and Amenities

Hotel Seehof does not attempt to compete with larger resorts that feature spas, gyms, or pools. Its amenities focus on practicality. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, an elevator provides access to upper floors, and parking is available, though limited. The hotel bar offers drinks in the evening, and the restaurant terrace doubles as a social space.

The front desk is staffed on a limited schedule, so guests arriving late should make arrangements in advance. Cyclists benefit from secure bike storage and e-bike charging, which makes sense given the popularity of the Bodensee cycle route.

Things Nearby

Hotel Seehof is ideally positioned for exploring local attractions on foot or by ferry:

  • The wonderful Pfahlbauten stilt-house museum is only a few minutes’ walk.
  • The Unteruhldingen ferry terminal is next to the hotel, with boats crossing to other towns around the lake.
  • The local promenade and yacht club are right outside the door.

Overall Impression

Hotel Seehof offers travelers a reliable lakefront option in Unteruhldingen. It succeeds in location, breakfast quality, and balcony rooms with water views. Limitations include the small number of parking spaces, lack of wellness facilities, and inconsistent air conditioning.

For guests who prioritize proximity to the harbor, direct access to ferries, and the convenience of a terrace overlooking Lake Constance, Hotel Seehof delivers what it promises. It is not a luxury property, but it makes a comfortable and practical base for exploring the region.

Rooms at the Hotel Seehof start at 90 euros.

Hear about my trip at Lake Constance Bike Trip (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) – Amateur Traveler Episode 964

I stayed in Hotel Seehof as a guest of the Lake Constance Tourism Board as part of a biking trip around Lake Constance. The tourism board paid for my stay, but the opinions expressed are my own.
