Hotel zum Schiff in Meersburg, Germany, sits directly on the shores of Lake Constance. With a history that spans over 700 years, the property seamlessly combines its lakeside location with a balance of traditional character and modern conveniences. While it does not aim for five-star extravagance, it does deliver a setting that highlights the lake, the old town, and the surrounding culture of Meersburg.
Location
The hotel occupies a prime spot in Meersburg’s lower town, directly on the waterfront promenade. Guests stepping outside the front door find themselves by the harbor, where ferries connect to other towns around the lake. This makes it particularly practical for those planning to explore Konstanz, Mainau Island, or Friedrichshafen without relying on a car.
Because it is situated within the old town, direct vehicle access is limited. Guests can pull up to unload luggage, but long-term parking is available in nearby lots, a short walk from the property. For visitors interested in the town itself, the New Palace, Meersburg Castle, thermal baths, and pedestrian streets filled with shops and cafés are all within walking distance.
For travelers arriving by bike, there is an inner courtyard where bikes can be parked.

Public Spaces
The standout public area is the lakefront terrace. This is where guests gather for breakfast, drinks, or dinner while watching the ferries come and go. Indoors, the restaurant doubles as both a dining and social space, offering panoramic views through large windows.
The overall style of the public areas combines modern furnishings with the building’s older architecture. Corridors and common rooms retain some historic features, though the design is not overly ornate. I stayed on the top floor, where you will need to duck at places in the hallways, as you might expect in a historic building.

Rooms
Hotel zum Schiff offers just over fifty rooms. Many feature balconies or windows that open directly toward the lake, which significantly enhances the experience. Rooms that face the promenade or inner courtyards are quieter but lack the dramatic views.
My room was under the eaves. It was surprisingly large, with the usual comfortable beds, duvets, and triangular pillows.
Standard amenities include Wi-Fi, television, minibars, safes, and en-suite bathrooms.
- Get a Car Rental
- Buy Travel Insurance
- Get a universal plug adapter
- Guided Tours in Germany
- Get an eSim to be able to use your smartphone abroad.
Bathrooms vary: some (mine) feature modern walk-in showers, while others retain older fittings. The big surprise was that when I walked into my bathroom, there was no toilet. The toilet and a sink were in a small room on the other end of the room, by the door. Fitting modern hotel rooms into old buildings requires some flexibility in design.
One important consideration is the lack of consistent air conditioning. Some rooms have small fans, but during the hotter weeks of summer, the interiors can become uncomfortably warm. For travelers sensitive to heat, this is a detail worth confirming in advance. On a September evening, I appreciated the windows that opened onto the cool breezes off Lake Constance.
Special Features
Hotel zum Schiff’s character derives largely from its history and its lakeside presence. The building itself has long been part of Meersburg’s waterfront and retains a sense of heritage, which contrasts with more modern developments along the lake.
Special features include:
- Lake-view balconies or terraces in selected rooms.
- An emphasis on regional wines and cuisine in the on-site restaurant.
- Meeting and event facilities for small groups.
- Pet-friendly policies that allow dogs with prior arrangement.
- Support for cyclists and drivers, including bicycle rentals.
Food and Dining
Breakfast is served buffet style and included in most room rates. The spread typically features fresh breads, cheeses, cold cuts, fruit, cereals, and eggs, with an emphasis on regional products. Weather permitting, the terrace becomes the main breakfast venue, giving diners open views of the lake.

One funky feature of the breakfast buffet was a butter dispensing machine. I didn’t know this was something one needed, and I regret that I didn’t try it out.

The on-site restaurant serves lunch and dinner and makes full use of its lakeside position. The menu emphasizes regional cuisine with seasonal variations, alongside some international dishes. I quite enjoyed what I ordered and found the service to be good.
Facilities and Amenities
As a mid-sized property, Hotel zum Schiff provides a balance of essentials rather than an extensive resort infrastructure. Facilities include:
- Free Wi-Fi throughout the property.
- An elevator for access to upper floors.
- Luggage storage and laundry service.
- Meeting and banquet rooms suitable for events.
- Bicycle rentals for exploring the Bodensee cycle routes.
- Arrangements for external parking nearby, though not directly at the hotel.
What the hotel does not offer are wellness facilities such as a spa, fitness center, or pool. Those seeking such amenities will need to look at nearby properties or visit the Meersburg thermal baths, which are only a short walk away.

Things Nearby
The location makes it easy to explore Meersburg and the surrounding region:
- The ferry port is only steps away, with boats crossing regularly to Konstanz and other towns.
- Meersburg Castle and the New Palace are both within a 10-minute walk, offering a deep dive into the region’s medieval and baroque history.
- Thermal baths, located just an 11-minute walk away, offer wellness and lakefront swimming facilities.
- The old town streets are filled with cafés, bakeries, and boutique shops, all within walking distance.
- The surrounding vineyards are accessible on foot or by short drives, providing opportunities for wine tasting.
Overall Impression
Hotel zum Schiff provides one of the most scenic bases in Meersburg, with its lakefront terrace and historic charm standing out as key advantages. It is particularly suited for travelers who prioritize location and views over extensive facilities. While limitations such as the absence of on-site parking and inconsistent cooling systems should be noted, the property delivers a strong sense of place. For those who value immediate access to the lake, ferries, and the historic town center, it is a compelling choice.
Rooms start around $130 per night. Although the hotel website is available in English, the booking section of the site is only in German.

I stayed at Hotel zum Schiff as a guest of the Lake Constance Tourism Board during a biking trip around Lake Constance. The tourism board paid for my stay, but the opinions expressed are my own.
