Hotel Constantia in Konstanz is a mid-sized, modern hotel located just outside the Old Town. It positions itself as a practical option for travelers who want proximity to Konstanz’s historic center, transport connections, and Lake Constance ferries. The property emphasizes functionality over luxury, with a focus on location, straightforward amenities, and a good breakfast offering.
Location
Hotel Constantia sits on a quieter street about a ten-minute walk from Konstanz’s train station and harbor and about a block from Schnetztor, the old city gate. The Old Town, with its medieval architecture, shopping streets, and cathedral, is also within walking distance. Ferries to Meersburg, Reichenau, and Friedrichshafen depart nearby, and the Swiss border is close enough for guests to cross on foot into Kreuzlingen.
For drivers, the hotel provides some limited parking, which is not always easy to find in historic city centers. For those like me traveling by bicycle, it also provides a garage to park bikes.

Public Spaces
The lobby is modern in style with clean, simple lines and bright lighting. Seating areas are limited but adequate for short waits. A small reception bar offers drinks, and there is a workstation for printing documents. The lobby is bright, colorful, and comfortable.
The hotel front desk staff were English-speaking and helpful. I was using a luggage moving service, and they made sure that my luggage connected with that company so that it would meet me at my next hotel.

Rooms
Rooms at Hotel Constantia are compact but well-equipped. Beds have firm mattresses, and blackout curtains ensure a darkened environment at night. Standard amenities include a flat-screen television, work desk, Wi-Fi access, and air conditioning. My room was on the top floor, accessible by a compact elevator or stairs. It was under a dormer.
The bed was what I have come to expect from a German hotel. It was a comfortable single bed with a comforter. However, the triangular pillows were a surprise. It was perhaps a bit Spartan in decor, but clean and cozy.

Bathrooms feature walk-in showers with excellent water pressure and are equipped with basic toiletries and a towel warmer.
Some rooms face surrounding streets, while mine faced toward the back parking area.
Special Features
The hotel operates on a smaller, boutique scale compared to large chain properties in the area. This allows for more individual service at reception. Eco-conscious measures include the use of energy-efficient lighting and promoting towel reuse. These features are typical of mid-range European hotels seeking to reduce environmental impact.
The hotel also features a rooftop terrace with views of the city, but I did not get a chance to visit it.

Dining
Breakfast is served buffet-style and includes a variety of fresh breads, cheeses, cold cuts, cereals, fresh fruit, and eggs. The stand-out item was cheesecake, which I did not think of as a breakfast item before, but do now. The dining room is bright and modern.
Facilities and Amenities
Hotel Constantia does not include wellness facilities such as a spa, pool, or gym. Instead, amenities focus on practicality: a small bar, meeting rooms, and bicycle rentals. The bicycles are useful for exploring the Lake Constance cycle routes, which pass through Konstanz. The property’s size and scope make it more suitable for short stays or city visits than extended resort-style vacations.
Nearby Attractions
The hotel’s location makes it easy to reach Konstanz highlights on foot:
- Konstanz Cathedral (Münster): Romanesque and Gothic architecture with a climbable tower.
- Harbor and Imperia Statue: A distinctive rotating sculpture marking the harbor entrance.
- Rosgartenmuseum: Local history displayed in a medieval guild hall.
- Old Town Streets: Shops, cafés, and bakeries in pedestrian-friendly alleys.
- Lake Ferries: Regular departures for day trips to Meersburg and Friedrichshafen.
The Swiss town of Kreuzlingen is also reachable on foot within minutes, adding an international element to the location.
Overall Assessment
Hotel Constantia provides a central, practical base in Konstanz. Its strengths are location, reliable in-room features such as air conditioning and Wi-Fi, and a strong breakfast buffet. Public spaces and facilities are pleasant, but the hotel does not cater to those seeking luxury or wellness experiences. For travelers prioritizing convenience and straightforward amenities within walking distance of the Old Town and harbor, Hotel Constantia is a good option.
Rooms at Hotel Constantia start at about $175.
