It’s true that the Oregon coast is popular at any time of year. The oceanfront Hotel Sylvia in Newport, Oregon, fits the bill for a year-round boutique hotel stay. My husband and I have visited the Oregon coast in the winter, spring, summer, and fall. To my delight, I have become an Oregonian in that I seek out Oregon coastal escapes in the winter. Hotel Sylvia, while not a new hotel, is a new favorite of mine.

The oceanfront Hotel Sylvia has a storied past. She started her life in 1909 as the Cliffhouse. In 1920, she became the Gilmore for sixty years. Recently, VIP Hospitality Group purchased and renovated the Nye Beach literary-themed hotel and changed the name to Hotel Sylvia. The Portland-based and family-owned VIP Hospitality Group is no stranger to Oregon beach hotels. I’ve stayed at several of their Nye Beach Newport, Oregon hotels and love them all for their uniqueness.

Upon entrance to Hotel Sylvia, you’ll be welcomed into a book-lover’s dream house. There is a cozy lobby lounge to the left of the reception desk for guests to sit and read by the gas fireplace. The staff has made a concerted effort to curate locally made gifts and edible goodies in the hotel gift shop area. I myself walked away with a Maeve Truffle Bar from Seattle Chocolate Co. after debating between Ranger bars and a jar of Marionberry jam.

Oceanfront Hotel Sylvia rooms

All of the 22 rooms at Hotel Sylvia are named after authors or popular genres. My husband and I stayed in room 200, also known as the Maya Angelou room. We were on the 2nd floor of the 4-story hotel. The entire hotel was completely renovated in 2024 with new paint, carpet, furniture, and fixtures, and opened to the public in July of 2025.

All of the hotel rooms have private bathrooms, and many rooms offer Nye Beach ocean views. There are 2 suites with a sofa sleeper, 1 ADA king bed with a patio, and 5 rooms with balconies. Nineteen of the 22 rooms have king beds, and three have a queen bed.

I selected the Maya Angelou room as it offered Pacific Ocean views from our comfortable king be,d and it included a gas fireplace. My husband took advantage of the large balcony outside, even during our November visit. We each enjoyed the walk-in shower with Beekman 1802 bath amenities and the rainfall showerhead fixture.

None of the hotel rooms features televisions or telephones. However, there is complimentary wifi, and there are books to borrow in every single room. Speaking of books, there are reading nooks on every level of the hotel. That’s in addition to the 2nd-floor garden deck and the oceanfront deck with a gas fireplace.

Cafe Sylvia dining

Breakfast at Cafe Sylvia is open to Hotel Sylvia guests and the public from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. The full-service breakfast restaurant is located on the lower level of the Nye Beach hotel. Don’t miss the house-made biscuits with Marionberry jam and the applewood smoked bacon.

Attic level of hotel includes several wood book shelves filled with books. A rectangular area rug hold a wooden hope chest with several books stacked on top. Three brown leather chairs and 2 green suede chairs surround the wood chest. A floor-to-ceiling reading lamp holds three light bulbs. Beyond the reading area is a velvet brown daybed that is next to a window in the attic.

Hotel Sylvia amenities

After breakfast is completed, the lower level of the hotel becomes yet another reading space, and a computer work area with ocean views. This hotel would be an ideal location for a book club retreat. Upstairs, on the fourth floor of the hotel, is the James Joyce library. The attic has been converted into a speakeasy of sorts for readers, writers, and puzzle builders. No password is required, but speaking in hushed tones is appreciated.

While there isn’t a swimming pool on the property, nor an elevator, there is an oceanfront fire pit with Adirondack chairs. We’ll need to return to this Oregon hotel in the summer or fall.

Hotel rates fluctuate seasonally, with May to September rates ranging from $199 to $399. Off-season rates from October to April range from $159 to $299, plus city tax. Our room was rented for $220.20, plus tax, on a weekday.

Check rates online at Expedia, Booking.com, Agoda.com, or Hotels.com.

Some rooms on the first floor are pet-friendly with an additional fee. The $35 daily pet package includes a dog bed and feeding bowls to borrow, as well as locally made dog treats. The path to Nye Beach is steps from Hotel Sylvia.

As this hotel experience is about disconnecting from cell phones and computers, it’s best to leave children at home. Those traveling with children 12 years and older are welcome on the property.
