Nestled along County Donegal’s rugged Wild Atlantic Way, the Shandon Hotel & Spa embodies refined seaside luxury. In 2025, the spa was shortlisted for the Spa of the Year accolades and currently ranks in Ireland’s top 1% on TripAdvisor. This four-star retreat offers guests panoramic views of Sheephaven Bay framed by wild seascapes.

Location
The Shandon Hotel & Spa sits on Ireland’s northwest coast in County Donegal, the Republic’s northernmost county. Perched in the charming village of Portnablash overlooking Sheephaven Bay—steps from Marble Hill Strand beach—it’s 9 minutes from Dunfanaghy town and 35 minutes from Letterkenny.

This renovated luxury property can be reached by scenic rural roads winding through coastal villages, beaches, and cliffs; be sure to give yourself enough time to stop and take it in. Getting to this area, you’d fly into Donegal Airport (CFN); it’s a 30-mile or 45-minute drive. You can also fly into Belfast (BFS), 2.25 hours away, or into the city of Derry (LDY), which is 50 miles or just over an hour’s drive. From Dublin Airport, it’s a 3.5-4 hour drive north.
Accommodations & Room Features
The spacious Superior Sea View rooms, refreshed in 2017, feature either a king bed or two double beds. The king rooms have pull-outs perfect for couples with small children. Modern ensuite rooms have plush robes & slippers, luxury toiletries, and premium fixtures, while large picture windows showcase sweeping Atlantic vistas.

The room is supplied with two complimentary water bottles, a safe, a fan, and a coffee/tea station. There is a large-screen TV and excellent Wi-Fi. A chest of drawers and an open wardrobe are provided. There is also a desk with plenty of outlets provided for your electronics plus an additional seating area to watch the weather change in an instant.
Amenities & Wellness Spa
The Shandon Hotel has a fantastic indoor heated pool, a children’s pool, a large hot tub with jets, a dry sauna, and a steam room. This facility has attendants providing towels and bathing caps for purchase—a bylaw requirement. There is a cordoned-off section for swimming laps and a sitting area for adult supervision or a beverage!

In 2023, the former playhouse was renovated into a new 24-hour state-of-the-art gym and studio with a variety of fitness and yoga classes. There is a resort shop providing food, drinks, and athletic apparel.

The Shandon Spa, just steps from the main hotel, above the fitness facility, delivers a Nordic spa experience. Signature treatments such as the Shandon Goddess Sculpt or Soulful Shandon Spa Soak provide patrons with access to the spa pool, outdoor Canadian hot tub, and the invigorating cold plunge. Alternate between the crushed ice station, eucalyptus steam bath, cold shower, and warm lounge chairs for a transformative morning or afternoon of profound relaxation.
Dining Excellence
The Shandon offers three distinctive dining venues, each framed by spectacular sea views perfect for morning coffee, pre-dinner drinks, or Wild Atlantic sunsets: Beats Bar on the main floor, and Jonjo’s Bar and Marble Restaurant upstairs.
Marbles delivers fine dining with smart casual elegance—white tablecloth à la carte service, inventive dishes, and exceptional wine pairings that elevate the meal (reservations are essential—so book early).
Beats Bar impresses with beautifully tiered lunch platters, which include seafood, sliders, and charcuterie options. We also had breakfast here with full Irish or continental breakfast selections, as well as made-to-order items.

Afternoon Tea – Shandon Hotel & Spa Photo Credit: Margarita Ibbott
The traditional afternoon tea remains a standout treat, showcasing scones, local jams, savoury sandwiches in flaky croissants, and exquisite petit fours. Whether you choose champagne or tea, you will love this small indulgence.
The Shandon Hotel & Spa elevates evenings with lively entertainment, from tribute bands to themed celebrations open to guests and locals alike. One unforgettable evening featured an ABBA tribute group, where guests donned glittering ’70s costumes for sing-alongs, dancing, and infectious participation that had everyone on their feet. Check the events page to join these spirited events.
Why Visit County Donegal?
From this scenic base, you can explore County Donegal’s wild beauty: Marble Hill Strand Beach is steps away, Horn Head’s dramatic coastal drive, Irish whisky tastings at Croithli Distillery, memorable meals at Leo’s Tavern, beautiful gardens in the Glenveagh National Park and Castle, and sea and cave exploration with Donegal Sea Adventure!

Overall Recommendation
With nightly rates ranging from €175 to €440, the Shandon Hotel & Spa offers exceptional value for its prime coastal location and holistic wellness focus. I highly recommend planning a minimum of a two-night stay, but three will allow for true immersion. Secure advanced reservations for Marbles Restaurant and your favourite spa treatments. Bring your camera because the early morning reveals one of the most spectacular sunrises that I’ve ever experienced. Then put on your swim trunks and bathrobe, and head down to the beach for an Atlantic cold plunge. It will take your breath away in more ways than one.

Disclosure: My husband and I were guests of the Shandon Hotel and Spa and Go Visit Donegal as part of the TBEX Donegal FAM trip. All opinions are my own.

Wow this is amazing Margarita, you make me want to visit and I live near there. Your pictures are fabulous and it shows Donegal and The Shandon Hotel so beautifully.
Thanks for your kind words, but my pictures do not do this area of Ireland any justice. It is more beautiful, it makes you feel alive. Makes me want to move to County Donegal. It was truly breathtaking. I am plotting my return…
