Located in the heart of Scottsdale’s entertainment district, just steps away from historic Old Town, the W Scottsdale is a mainstay for travelers, staycationers, and diners in a rapidly expanding destination. Built in 2008 when luxury vacation properties in Scottsdale were mainly the large resorts on the outskirts of town, the W brought urban chic to folks who wanted to stay closer to the action.
When it first opened, the W included two floors of private residences. Later converted to guest suites, the rooms feature private access. As such, they’re popular among high-profile guests. Overall, the property has 245 guest rooms, including standard rooms, junior suites, and executive suites.
Staying at the W Scottsdale
There are three tiers of standard rooms: Wonderful, Spectacular, and Fabulous. All standard rooms are 365 square feet. Suites include Marvelous, Wow, and Extreme Wow.
I got to experience the Wow Suite. This two-bedroom suite includes a full living room, kitchen, and dining room. The rooms each feature a king-size bed.
The suite’s finishes are luxurious, and the furnishings are plush and comfortable. I enjoyed the fun touches, such as martini glass art in one of the bedrooms, and a peek-a-boo photographer in the bathroom window. I found it a bit funny that the living room featured the same sofa that I have at home.
The bathrooms are bright and open, with a separate soaking tub and glass-enclosed shower. The vanity is large and can hold all of your toiletries. All amenities are from the hotel’s AWAY Spa brand.
Soak Up the Sun
The second floor is home to the 21-and-older WET Deck. While other Valley hotels boast about having the highest rooftop pool, the W’s pool is Arizona’s only chilled pool. And in a state where summer temps can reach 120 degrees, pool water can feel like bath water. So a chilled pool is a cool treat for visitors who aren’t used to the desert heat.
The W is known for its weekend summer pool parties. Guests and local residents enjoy craft cocktails, music by DJs and live bands, and light bites from the poolside WET Deck restaurant. Soak up the scene in one of the private cabanas on the Sunset Lawn or catch up on the latest game at the bar. A resort pass is available for non-guests and locals, allowing them to partake of this amenity.
Fun fact: The pool is located over the hotel’s porte cochere. Four portholes allow for a peek from below into the waters where you can watch swimmers pass by.
What’s New at W Scottsdale
After a day of desert sightseeing or simply relaxing poolside, the AWAY Spa is a great spot for a rejuvenating massage, facial, or body treatment. Recently, the spa partnered with Aescape, a lifestyle robotics company, to provide robotic massages. Guests can book a 30-minute or 60-minute treatment.
Also making its debut just in time for summer is Sexy Roman. Located in the home of the former Sushi Roku, this Italian dining concept features fresh seasonal ingredients and elevated flavors. Headed by James Beard Award-nominated chef Jason Franey, the restaurant offers a sophisticated yet approachable menu that includes handmade pastas, raw bar offerings, and a robust beverage program.
The interiors of Sexy Roman channel the charm of an Italian villa. Custom artwork, hand-troweled plaster walls, natural stone tabletops, and plush seating create a look that’s tailored and timeless yet unapologetically extravagant.
Sexy Roman opened on June 2.
