If you’ve ever dreamed of an extended visit in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, I have the perfect place for you. Suites Santo Domingo was originally founded as the Departamentos Engelbrecht by William Engelbrecht, a German transplant to San Miguel in the 1930s.

For over 77 years the property has hosted artists, writers, and other creatives that decided to explore the streets of San Miguel and many who decided to stay permanently. The hotel’s current owner grew up in this hotel, where meals and conversation were shared between the Engelbrecht family and their guests for decades.

Entering the hotel from the street, you’ll be greeted by a sunlit patio with a craggy Xacalaxuchil tree in its center draped in bougainvillea vines. Under the arches around the patio are clustered of cozy rattan loungers, profuse tropical house plants trailing from above and below, and antique baubles.

A great place to meet at the end of the day, if you are of a social inclination make sure to get one of the rooms that ring the patio. For a little more privacy, the Premium suite in the back part of the property overlooking the sloping yard is a lovely option, with blue painted walls and just-cutesy-enough decor.

Here you can take advantage of the outdoor dining table and pick yourself a fresh orange or papaya from the nearby trees. For even more space the Estudio Principal has king-size bedroom, a full kitchen and living room, an outdoor dining area, and faces out into the backyard making you feel like you are completely alone in your little retreat.

The spaces have a nice worn-in ambiance. Suites Santo Domingo is made for travelers looking for a place that feels loved, not slick and impersonal. Owner Guillermo explains that they have tried to maintain the vintage feel of the spaces, preserving original stoves, sinks, and other appliances where they can in order to honor the hotel’s past. Faded Mexican tiles in the bathroom or a couch pillow soft from years of use are a comfort to those who want a home away from home and not a hotel room.

Rooms on the second floor have a great view of the surrounding cityscape as well as a shared outdoor patio space with chairs and loungers, but tend to be smaller than the other options available. Built inside an early 20th-century home, almost every suite requires going up and down some steps, with the rooms around the central patio having the very least (only one or two coming in from the street. Anyone with mobility issues will want to check ahead to make sure they can book an appropriate room.

There is no on-site breakfast but many of the suites include kitchens for cooking your own and full-size refrigerators so you can keep enough ingredients to make a real meal.  Large closets, roomy bathrooms, and cozy couches grace the largest of the suites, with the smaller ones having more kitchenette-style outfitting. If you plan on staying long-term best to book far in advance and pay for the upgrade.

Few toiletries are provided with the idea that folks will want to purchase their own after arrival. Large flatscreen TVs have a variety of channels and all the streaming services where you can log in to you own account. San Miguel can be chilly at night during winter, but the front desk will provide you will an extra space heater if you need it. Beds are comfortable and linens fine quality.
