I arrive in Málaga, Spain. The city’s sun-splashed streets, framed by palm trees and Renaissance façades, resemble an open-air museum. Every turn tempts. It’s the mosaicked walls, modern galleries, and the Spanish chatter spilling from cafés.
And tucked inside Málaga’s Old City is Catalonia Puerta del Mar, surrounded by museums, fashion houses, market halls, and espresso bars. I can trace the city’s creative lineage—from Gerónimo Cuervo’s grand façades to Picasso’s daring brushstrokes and Antonio Banderas’s theatrical flourish—all within a short stroll.
Around the corner from Catalonia Puerta del Mar is the Mercado de Atarazanas. The day of my check-in, it’s bursting with Andalusian color—pyramids of oranges, slices of jamón ibérico, and local gossip under a stained-glass ceiling. Each element of the hotel mirrors Málaga’s DNA: artistic, grounded, and full of life.
So yes, this is a new boutique hotel that rewards curiosity.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Catalonia Puerta del Mar sits in the historic heart of Málaga in Andalucia on a tranquil side street that is only steps from the city’s main pedestrian promenade. From here, I can stroll to the Picasso Museum in under five minutes or reach the Teatro del Soho, where hometown hero Antonio Banderas’s name lights the marquee. Every major landmark—the Cathedral, Alcazaba, Roman Theatre, and Calle Larios—lies within easy walking distance.
From this hotel location, Málaga’s streets brim with indie boutiques, perfumeries, and patisseries that transform the city into a sensory playground. Shoppers can wander designer avenues while art lovers drift toward nearby galleries or the Pompidou satellite on the waterfront. When the day heats up, cafés spill onto the cobbles, offering respite beneath citrus trees. I can reach the port or La Malagueta Beach in less than 15 minutes.

HOTEL OVERVIEW
Catalonia Puerta del Mar embodies a Málaga state of mind—historic at heart yet contemporary in character. The 72-room property, which opened on June 30, 2025, ushers in a new chapter for the Old City. Over three meticulously restored buildings, you’ll find original façades with wrought-iron balconies, stone cornices, and carved lintels.
The restoration pays homage to one of Málaga’s visionary architects, Gerónimo Cuervo González (1838–1898). He was behind the Teatro Cervantes, Hospital Gálvez, and Iglesia de San Pablo. González’s commitment to civic beauty and craftsmanship is evident through the cornices and the grand archway.
Stepping inside, I’m greeted by light and proportion—a play of stone, glass, and calm.
The lobby glows with daylight that pours through a central atrium, highlighting a wall of green and contemporary art nodding to Picasso’s geometric flair. Designers kept the palette grounded in Málaga’s DNA: the sand of La Malagueta, the blue of the Mediterranean, and the gold of Andalusian sunshine.
BRAND NEWS
And at the heart of it all is Catalonia Hotels & Resorts. The Spanish hotel brand, born in Barcelona in 1983, was founded by the Vallet brothers. They dreamed of creating comfortable, design-forward, family-run hotels rooted in local culture.
Today, the group has grown into one of Spain’s largest hotel chains, with properties across Europe and the Caribbean. This Málaga debut is the company’s second hotel to open in this Andalusian city and is unmistakably Spanish.
Check-in is delightfully swift. I’m offered cool citrus water, a smile, and a digital key.

The gastrobar situated in the other building is where guests enjoy a breakfast spread of Andalusian flavors: vine-ripened tomatoes, olive oils, rustic breads, local cheeses, and slices of jamón Serrano. On one counter sits the largest Nutella jar in the world.
On the main level, off from the main reception, you’ll see a fitness room. While compact, it has everything needed for a quick workout before hitting the streets again.
The hotel’s sustainable soul shows in its LED systems, energy sensors, and water-saving designs. It’s all subtle, smart, and sincere—just as the Vallet brothers intended.
SUITE HIGHLIGHTS

My temporary home is Room 406. Bright and modern sunlight beams through tall windows, pooling over the pale oak floor. The space feels larger than its footprint. The design is so cleverly proportioned that every detail seems intentional.
The bed—a generous duo combo with crisp linens—anchors the room. A soft grey headboard evokes linen canvas, the kind Picasso might have touched as a young artist.
At night, I dim the lights to the “Relax” mode via the bedside tablet, and the room takes on the warmth of a Spanish sunset.
Technology here enhances rather than intrudes. Bluetooth speakers, USB-C outlets, smart climate controls, and mood lighting are all seamlessly integrated. A Nespresso machine stands ready beside a plate of almond cookies—a thoughtful Andalusian welcome.
Draw the curtains, and the room gets even more intimate. One pair of soft grey drapes acts as a separator, nicely dividing the sleeping quarters from the basin and bathroom. By the wash basin, bulbous white lights framing the chrome-fringed mirror set the mood. Smart natural tones add to the glistening walk-in shower equipped with a polished chrome rain shower. Swirling splashes of pink and inky blue hues adorn its smooth marble walls. It’s almost like Picasso himself flicked his paint brushes onto them.
HOTEL PERKS
Prime location, Catalonia Puerta del Mar is steps from museums, shops, and historic landmarks. You get to immerse yourself in Málaga’s rich heritage via this multi-million euro transformation of three historic buildings that are guided by local architectural sensibilities.
I love the gastrobar for a full Spanish buffet breakfast. Don’t forget the smart technology. With the digital keys, you get mood lighting, motion-sensor corridors, and fast Wi-Fi. For cardio and strengthening exercises, the onsite fitness center is a good start for your pre-sightseeing adventure. The staff knows their city, sharing its stories with pride.
FINAL IMPRESSIONS
This newest addition to the Catalonia Hotels & Resorts portfolio to arrive in Málaga reflects everything that has made the Vallet brothers’ family brand a Spanish success story for over four decades—warm service, timeless design, and an instinct for the right location.
