Freshly rebranded as the Courtyard by Marriott Santa Marta Resort, this well-located hotel marks a notable shift from its previous life under the Accor banner, though ownership remains the same. The continuity is important, especially in a market like Santa Marta, where consistency can vary widely.

Positioned as a more accessible sister property to the beachfront Santa Marta Marriott Resort Playa Dormida, this Courtyard leans into a more attainable luxury without feeling like a ‘family’ hotel. It offers elevated comfort, generous space, and a resort-like feel without the premium price tag. This is a quiet luxury for travelers seeking reliability with a touch of indulgence. Does the Marriott reflag truly elevate the experience, or is it simply a change in signage? I believe it is the former.

Location

Located about 10 minutes from Santa Marta’s Bolivar International Airport, the Courtyard by Marriott sits within a busy hotel corridor along Colombia’s Caribbean coast. The area is a mix of large international brands, mid-size and large Colombian hotel groups, and private apartments, giving it the feel of a purpose-built tourism zone rather than a traditional neighborhood.

There are small shops and corner stores within walking distance, but it is just as easy to take a taxi to Rodadero (the traditional ‘party’ beach) or further into Santa Marta proper. The city center is about 20-30 minutes away.

The beach is a block away and easily walkable, with hotel staff available to assist with chairs, umbrellas, and towels. This is a public beach shared with nearby properties. Expect a lively atmosphere, with vendors selling everything from handmade jewelry and hats, snacks, and day tours to Tayrona National Park or a ride on a banana boat. While a few were overly persistent, there are a lot of them, and it’s all part of the experience.

Accommodations and Room Features

My Deluxe Guest Room was exceptionally spacious –easily one of the most impressive features of this property. With a pull-out sofa, large desk, and generous storage, the room can comfortably accommodate four guests (two adults & two children) without ever feeling crowded. It’s a layout that immediately elevates the stay beyond what most travelers expect from this category.

The bed itself felt closer to a king than a queen and delivered the signature Marriott comfort with plush pillows, quality linens, and a genuinely restful sleep. The room also featured strong air conditioning, a large flat-screen TV, a mini-fridge, and a simple coffee station. One of the more unique and thoughtful features is the family-friendly room configuration.

Select rooms can be connected to create a shared private entrance, rather than a standard interior connecting door. This allows families to stay close while still maintaining a sense of privacy –ideal for those traveling with teens or multigenerational groups.

The bathroom layout is a bit unconventional, with the spacious walk-in shower positioned closer to the bed and the toilet tucked nearer to the entryway. It works-especially for privacy–but if you’re someone who tends to wake during the night, it takes a moment to adjust. They carry the Gilchrist and Soames toiletry line.

Storage was excellent. A large closet, plenty of drawers, and all the expected amenities, including an iron, made it easy to settle in, whether for a quick stay or something longer. Laundry service is also available, which adds to the overall convenience.

If you have the option, a corner room is well worth requesting. Mine came with a noticeably larger balcony, offering partial ocean views alongside a glimpse at the park below and the commercial area a few blocks away. While the most direct waterfront vistas are claimed by neighboring residential buildings, the added outer space gave me the opportunity to enjoy my morning coffee (and evening nightcap) on the balcony, making this room feel that much more luxurious.

Amenities

The large, multi-level pool is the social heart of the hotel and a natural draw for families. Even during the busy Holy Week period, it never felt overwhelming, lively, yes, but still relaxed. In the afternoon and early evenings, the atmosphere shifts, with families gathering poolside, sharing meals, and lingering in the water as the day cools after the sun had set hours ago.

That said, there were a few practical considerations. The pool deck can be slippery underfoot and without handrails, getting in and out requires a bit more care than expected, something to keep in mind, especially if you are traveling with older family members.

A lifeguard was on duty throughout the day, providing towels for both pool and beach use. Poolside food and beverage service is available, and it’s well worth taking advantage of – the ceviche and Club Colombia beer, in particular, were a standout and made for an easy, satisfying lunch.

The hotel features a well-equipped fitness center. At the time of my stay (two weeks from the re-opening and branding), the spa and wellness services were in development through a third-party provider, with plans to introduce this and a kids club in the near future.

Dining

Dining is, without question, one of the standout experiences at this property and one that genuinely nudges it into that ‘luxury’ category. Emilio’s, the on-site restaurant, delivers far more than you might expect, with a menu that highlights fresh, local Colombian ingredients and traditional dishes while still offering broad international appeal. From creamy seafood pasta dishes to expertly prepared beef dishes, each meal felt thoughtfully composed and consistently executed.

The breakfast buffet, in particular, is worth lingering over. From traditional soups to tropical fruits, juices of Colombia, and made-to-order hot dishes. It’s the kind of breakfast that invites you to slow down rather than rush out the door. Linger in the morning!

The Chef has clearly put effort into creating a menu that feels both rooted in place and elevated in execution, making dining here not just convenient but genuinely enjoyable.

What I Loved

The service was exceptional throughout my stay. Staff were consistently friendly, attentive, and proactive in offering assistance with everything from luggage to coordinating transportation between hotels. The restaurant team deserves a special congratulations for their warmth and professionalism. The executive staff, including the General Manager and Assistant GM, were gracious and generous with their time. The two individuals managing these two properties did an excellent job making my stay exceptional.

Overall Recommendation

The Courtyard by Marriott Santa Marta Resort delivers a stay that feels firmly rooted in attainable, affordable, family luxury. It goes well beyond the brand’s expectations, offering expansive rooms, thoughtful family-friendly design, and a level of service that feels both polished and welcoming. While it doesn’t reach the elevated luxury of its sister property just 7 minutes away (more on that in a later review), it comes surprisingly close in all the ways that matter, comfort, space, dining, and overall experience, while remaining accessible in price.

For families, the oversized rooms and unique configurations make it an especially compelling choice. For other travelers, it offers a relaxed, resort-like atmosphere with the reassurance of Marriott standards. If you’re looking for a stay that feels indulgent without being extravagant, this Courtyard stands out as one of Santa Marta’s best upscale options.
