Hotel Tuchmacher

The city of Görlitz, Germany, is a bit like the land that time forgot. This small German city right on the border with Poland has 4,000 historic buildings. The streets are lined with Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and later facades, the squares feel theatrical in the best way, and even a casual walk can feel like stepping into a film set. Hotel Tuchmacher works because it is not just near that atmosphere, it is part of it.

I visited the hotel as part of a larger press trip to Saxony with the Saxony Tourism Board.

Hotel Tuchmacher

Location

Hotel Tuchmacher is on Peterstraße in the Altstadt. The hotel occupies restored Renaissance patrician houses dating from the 16th century and was converted to a hotel in 1998. It has 60 rooms and suites.

The biggest advantage of Hotel Tuchmacher is that it places you directly in the old town. It is just around the corner from the imposing St. Peter and Paul Church, the largest five-aisled late Gothic hall church in Saxony, famous for its Baroque Sun Organ. It is also only two blocks from the river and the border with Poland.

If you are arriving by car, the hotel offers parking at a facility 100 meters away. If you are driving an electric car, the property also provides EV charging stations.

First Impressions and Public Spaces

Some hotels talk about history as a decorative theme. Hotel Tuchmacher has the advantage of operating within historic buildings, which gives the public spaces a different feel.

I would not describe the public areas as particularly stunning or dramatic, but these did have maybe a classic elegance.

Room Features

Where Hotel Tuchmacher did impress was in the rooms. My room was a standard double room and had as much space as my first apartment out of school. It had a typical large German double mattress bed with the usual comfortable mattress and duvets.

It also had a separate sitting room with a desk, and had a second desk in the main bedroom area.

The bathroom had both a shower and a tub, but I was a bit surprised to find no toilet. After some searching, I found the toilet in its own closet-like room across the hall from the bathroom. The bathroom had a single sink and a towel warmer that I have learned to love.

The decor of both the bedroom and the bathroom was simple and understated.

The Wi-Fi was surprisingly quick, given the issues I have seen in the past from the thick walls of historic buildings.

Special Features

The property also has an elevator, which can make a significant difference in an older building, especially for anyone traveling with luggage or preferring to avoid stairs after a long day of walking Görlitz’s cobbled streets. It was a bit quirky because of the historic building, with some stops only half a story apart.

The hotel includes a wellness oasis, sauna, fitness area, and a pet-friendly policy. My busy itinerary did not allow for time to explore the spa area.

Food and Dining

The hotel has a restaurant called the Schneider Stube, which serves specialties from Saxony and Silesia.

My group ate breakfast in the hotel’s breakfast room, which was warm and inviting.

The breakfast was not the largest spread I have seen, but it was good, and I was particularly pleased with the freshly baked bread.

Because you are in the old city, other restaurants are very close. We particularly enjoyed the dinner at Lucie Schulte, which is only two and a half blocks from the hotel.

Things Nearby

Görlitz sometimes has the nickname of “Görliwood” because more than 100 films have been shot there. It is worth wandering around the old town.

The Old Town Bridge is another easy walk and one of the most satisfying quick outings in Görlitz. Crossing the bridge brings you to Zgorzelec, Poland.

For a different aspect of the city’s history, the Görlitz Synagogue is also worth seeking out. It is one of the few synagogues in Germany to have survived Kristallnacht in 1938.

We also enjoyed the photogenic old library and the Silesian culture museum.

Final Thoughts

The Hotel Tuchmacher site offers some package deals, but as of this writing, the English version of the site is rather broken. Rooms start at around $100 a night.

Check rates for Hotel Tuchmacher online at Expedia, Booking.com, Agoda.com, or Hotels.com.

Hotel Tuchmacher works best for travelers who want their hotel to deepen their sense of place. This is not a generic chain with a historic district address. It is a hotel that participates in Görlitz’s story, set inside restored Renaissance houses, positioned in the middle of the old town, and equipped with enough modern comforts to make the stay easy.

I stayed at the Hotel Tuchmacher as part of a press trip to Saxony. My stay was sponsored by the hotel and the tourism board, but the opinions expressed are my own.
