Hanoi Plaza Suite Hotel: Boutique Stay-Hanoi’s Old Quarter

In Hanoi, Vietnam, the Hanoi Plaza Suite Hotel pairs modern boutique loveliness with the bustle of the city’s iconic Old Quarter. My last visit to Hanoi was almost 10 years ago.  Although the hotels are mostly the multi-storied skinny buildings shouldered between shops, travel agents, and restaurants that I remember, there are new additions to the scene. The Hanoi Plaza Suite Hotel and Spa is one of them. This hotel has a bit of elbow room.

Hanoi Plaza Suite Hotel Fits Hanoi’s Old Quarter Scene

This hotel is a new building that fits well into the mix of the Old Quarter landscape. Tucked next door is a narrow sliver of a historic building with a slanted red tiled roof. While I was there, a workman was meticulously painting the original Vietnamese lettering of the entrance. All along Dao Duy Tu Street is a mix of shops and other businesses, including Az Ha Noi Cooking Class Center

Hand Painted Murals Are a Visual Treat

The Hanoi Plaza Suite Hotel looks like a modern version of an old-style building. In the lobby and common areas, a visual celebration of Hanoi is a splendid treat. Each is features lush hand-painted murals that showcase Hanoi’s must-see locations. There’s the Train Street, where cafes and bars on either side of the tracks make way for the trains that pass through.  Turtle Tower, which sits in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake, is another feature. Even the elevator doors and the elevator interior are painted with scenes featuring foliage and birds.

Here is where travelers can be close to Hanoi’s vibrancy but enjoy respite comfort in between activities. As soon as I stepped into the lobby, the street noise disappeared. White marble floors gleam and the furniture is a fusion of Asian and Western designs.

About the Guest Rooms at the Hanoi Plaza Suite Hotel

Guest rooms are appointed as perfect getaways. If you want a larger room with large windows, book a deluxe room. Economy rooms also have a window, but the window is smaller. Regardless of the room type, each has the same lovely hardwood floors, wall mounted flatscreen TVs, comfortable, modern furniture, and terrific bathrooms.

The bathrooms are sleek and fit a more Western-style taste. The shower is a walk-in with a glass door and a rainfall shower head. Toiletries are in glass pump containers by the vessel-style sink.

Sometimes, mattresses in Asia tend to run thinner. The mattresses on the beds at the Hanoi Plaza Suite Hotel are thick. From the bedside lamps and tables to the room’s sitting area chairs and small table, the aim is elegant simplicity that works. Also included in room amenities are a hairdryer, a safe, an electric kettle, two bottles of water, tea bags, and coffee packets.

Because this hotel is within walking distance of Hoan Kiem Lake, the water puppet theater, and easy access to Hanoi’s offerings, if you’re looking for a hotel that fits Western standards but has a local feel, the Hanoi Plaza Suite Hotel is worth checking out.

If You Go

If you go, I highly recommend the cooking class at Az Ha Noi Cooking Class Center. I booked a 1/2-day class through one of the walk-in travel agencies on a spur of the moment. I ended up being the only student under the excellent tutelage of Jenny, who took me to the around-the-corner local market to shop for ingredients. Because this hotel is only a few doors down, you can tuck away leftovers before heading out to enjoy all Hanoi has to offer.

Thanks to the chef and Jenny, who helped a lot, this vegetarian fare was delicious

Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to enjoy the hotel’s spa. There are several services from which to choose, but you need to let the staff know ahead of time what services you want to book.

Rates start at $47 and are currently discounted. Breakfast is included. I found the staff to be warm, welcoming,g and quite helpful.

Check rates online at Expedia, Booking.com, or Hotels.com.

As a hint, if you are traveling with someone and you want your own bed, book a family room or an elite room.
