With a box of local chocolates, a king-size bed, and boats gliding across Fish Creek Harbor, Fresh Coast Motel knew how to make a memorable first impression. When I visited in May 2026, the exterior entrances reminded me of an old-fashioned roadside motel, but inside, my room was clean, modern, and thoughtfully updated. Best of all, I could walk to the beach, restaurants, and shops of downtown Fish Creek.

Fresh Coast Motel is not the place to book if you want room service, a grand lobby, or someone waiting behind a front desk. For me, that was not a drawback. I wanted a comfortable room near the water and the freedom to walk into Fish Creek whenever I pleased. Self-check-in was simple, and without a busy lobby or large crowds coming and going, the property felt pleasantly quiet.

I stayed for several nights, giving me time to enjoy both the motel and its convenient location. I used the motel as my base for exploring Peninsula State Park, visiting neighboring Door County communities, sampling local wine, and riding the ferry. One evening, I lingered outside at dusk, watching the boats move across the harbor as the light faded over the water. It was one of those quiet Door County moments that made me glad I had returned for the evening a bit earlier than usual.

A Door County Motel with a Fresh Point of View

Asunset.

Fresh Coast Motel sits at 4123 Main Street in downtown Fish Creek, directly across from the public beach and close to Fish Creek Harbor. Restaurants, shops, the public beach, and the waterfront were all within walking distance. Even with downtown so close, the motel felt peaceful when I returned after a busy day.

The property has been part of the Fish Creek community for more than 80 years. Formerly known as the By the Bay Motel, the property dates to the 1940s. Despite its age, my room did not feel dated. The renovation gave it a clean coastal look, but the exterior doors and walkways still reminded me that this was once a classic roadside motel.

My stay began with self-check-in. I did not need to stand at a front desk or wait for someone to locate my reservation. The instructions were easy to follow, and within minutes, I was settling into my room.

My room was on the second floor, accessible by an exterior staircase and walkway. There is no elevator, so guests who have difficulty climbing stairs or carrying luggage should request a first-floor room when booking.

Although Fresh Coast Motel describes itself as a boutique motel, it does not feel overly trendy or formal. The navy and gray décor suited the waterfront setting. It felt coastal without trying too hard.

My King Water View Room

A king size bed with blue pillows at the Fresh Coast Motel.

I stayed in a King Water View Room, which is designed for one or two guests. My first impression was how clean and carefully arranged it was. Although the room was not large, I had enough space to unpack and settle in for several nights. The dresser provided more storage than I needed and would offer plenty of space for a couple’s clothing. I stored my suitcase on the luggage stand. For a couple who spends most of the day exploring Door County, the size should be comfortable.

A delicious box of chocolates was waiting on the table. It was a small gesture, but finding a sweet treat waiting for me was an unexpected pleasure.

I found the table handy for snacking on leftovers and for use as a desk for my computer in the evenings.

The gray and navy color palette echoed the water across the street. A few maritime touches completed the coastal look without making the room feel overly themed.

The king-size bed was comfortable, and I slept well throughout my stay. Even though I was close enough to walk into downtown Fish Creek, street noise did not keep me awake. After spending the day climbing Eagle Tower, visiting the lighthouse, or exploring nearby communities, I was happy to return to that king-size bed. And did I mention those delicious chocolates kept calling my name?

The water view was the room’s standout feature. I enjoyed watching boats cross the harbor and seeing the light change over the water. I found myself checking the harbor whenever I passed the window. Sometimes I watched the boats; other times, the changing evening light caught my attention. The view made the room feel connected to Fish Creek instead of simply located there.

The exterior walkway does create one minor privacy issue. Because other guests pass directly in front of the second-floor windows, I needed to remember to pull down the blinds. Leaving them open gave a view of the water, but it also let anyone walking past see into the room. Closing the blinds solved the problem, but then, of course, I lost that lovely water view. I found myself opening and closing them depending on how many people were passing.

The bathroom was modern and spotless, with plenty of towels and a shower that worked well. It felt far more updated than the phrase “roadside motel” might lead some travelers to expect.

Fresh Coast Motel Amenities

Since I stayed several nights, I appreciated having a mini refrigerator, microwave, television, Wi-Fi, and toiletries in the room.

The room also had a coffee station, although I headed out for breakfast instead of using it. The mini refrigerator proved more useful to me, especially for storing water and restaurant leftovers. Door County restaurants tend to serve generous portions, so you’ll probably use it too.

I used the microwave for heating those leftovers. But here is where I had to become creative. My leftovers were in styrofoam and foil containers. I knew they wouldn’t work in the microwave. A bakery item I had purchased was in a small cardboard box. So I ate the bakery item and put my leftovers in the cardboard box to reheat.

Fresh Coast Motel has outdoor seating overlooking the water. This became one of my favorite parts of the property. I could sit peacefully and watch the activity on Fish Creek Harbor.

The motel also has an outdoor fire pit. I was disappointed the outdoor fire pit wasn’t working during my visit. With its view of the harbor, I could imagine sitting there after dinner if it had been available.

The property also added an eight-person outdoor dry sauna in 2026. I did not use it, so check its seasonal availability directly with the motel if that amenity matters to you.

Convenient parking was available. I could walk to many Fish Creek attractions. That walkability matters during Door County’s busy travel season, when parking near popular restaurants and shops can require patience.

Exploring Door County from Fish Creek

A man in uniform standing in front of a lighthouse.

Fresh Coast Motel’s location made it an excellent base for exploring northern Door County. At Peninsula State Park, I climbed Eagle Tower for sweeping views and visited Eagle Bluff Lighthouse to see the area’s maritime past.

I also visited Lautenbach’s Orchard Country Winery & Market, explored Baileys Harbor and Ellison Bay, and rode the ferry. Fish Creek’s central location made it easy to venture out during the day and return to the motel in the evening.

When I wanted to stay close to the motel, I browsed Fish Creek’s shops, walked along the waterfront, and visited the public beach. I enjoyed dinner at Barringer’s Restaurant and had breakfast at the historic White Gull Inn. Being able to walk to dinner meant no parking worries or driving after dark.

At the end of the day, I could return to my room, look across the street, and watch the sunset over the water. That view, and the ability to walk to many places, was one of the best parts of my stay.

I recommend Fresh Coast Motel primarily to couples and solo travelers who want to stay near the water and walk into downtown Fish Creek. You will probably enjoy the motel most if you prefer coming and going independently and do not need a staffed front desk.

My King Water View Room was ideal for one or two people, but the motel also offers other king rooms, double-queen rooms, select dog-friendly accommodations, and a Cozy Queen Room with a private balcony. Larger groups can consider the property’s five-bedroom Deckhouse.

Self-check-in makes arrival flexible, but travelers who prefer a traditional hotel with a staffed lobby and extensive personal service may find the experience different from what they expect.

Guests with mobility limitations should contact the motel before booking. Second-floor rooms require climbing exterior stairs, and there is no elevator. If privacy matters, remember guests may walk past rooms along the exterior corridor.

I would book the water view again. Watching the boats and evening light from just outside my room was worth carrying my luggage up the stairs.

Room costs vary depending on room type, season, events, and day of week.  Check rates for Fresh Coast Motel online at Expedia, Booking.com, Agoda.com, or Hotels.com.
