I was excited when my husband and I had the opportunity to explore the best of Argentina with Tara Tours. Starting in Buenos Aires, we then proceeded to the southernmost Argentinian city, Ushuaia. This area is located in what is also referred to as Patagonian Argentina. Our stay at Las Hayas Ushuaia Resort was most notable for its amazing views of Ushuaia Bay and the Beagle Channel. As a result of its location high on top of a hill overlooking the city, the hotel is extremely popular with tourists.
The Location
Virtually at the end of the South American Continent, Ushuaia is located in the Province of Tierra del Fuego in Argentina. Placed at the 54th parallel south latitude, it claims to be the “world’s southernmost city” and is one of five internationally recognized Antarctic gateway cities. It’s where the end of the world meets the Beagle Channel and the sea before Antarctica. Where the climate is described as ocean-moderated mild tundra climate, where weather can change 4-5 times a day, where winds can blow strongly, and where sunrises and sunsets bathe the harbor in unbelievable, glorious colors.
The Hotel
Las Hayas Ushuaia Resort Hotel offers comfortable accommodations with an assortment of guest amenities that include a spa, indoor pool, and hot tub. Spa facilities include a sauna, hammam, and Turkish baths. The resort also has a fitness center and a squash court. However, our schedule left us with very little downtime to enjoy these facilities. What we did enjoy was the restaurant featuring international cuisine, a gorgeous terrace with panoramic vistas, as well as free Wi-Fi in public areas. Because the Port of Ushuaia is only 3 km away, and since the hotel sits on top of a hill, the views of the harbor are simply amazing.
The hotel claims that English, French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese are spoken, which indeed gives it an international appeal. Since representatives with our tour checked us in, we really didn’t have the opportunity to see what languages were spoken. However, I do recall that in the restaurant, Spanish was more widely spoken and that not all waiters spoke English.

The Room
Though the website describes the property as a 5-star quality experience, I would be more inclined to rate it as 4. While there are many amenities and public facilities, the bedrooms just do not live up to a 5-star experience. Rather, they seem outdated with “Grandma-like” quilts and gently used beds. The panoramic view of the Bay of Bengal harbor, however, more than made up for the “dated” appearance.

The Meals
A buffet breakfast is served daily and provides a nice selection of items for a variety of palates. For other meals, the Le Martial restaurant serves international dishes à la carte, and they are quite tasty. You are somewhat of a captive audience at this hotel, as there are very few alternatives available unless you opt to take a taxi and go into town. Overall, I was very pleased with the prices and quality of selection.
The Rates
For the best rates online as well as special packages and promotions, book directly with the Las Hayas Ushuaia Resort Hotel. Depending on the day of the week, season, and room type, rates currently list for around $179 -282 USD per night. Check the website for special promotions.

The Bottom Line

- Rooms have either a forest or a sea view. Definitely opt for the sea view to experience the amazing sunrises and sunsets. If not possible, there are public decks by the restaurant that will give you the same amazing views, just not from the comfort of your room.
- Rates include breakfast.
- No resort fee.
- Some rooms have elevator service, while other rooms are only accessible by stairs. If mobility is an issue, make sure you request a room with elevator access.
- Our room definitely felt dated, Grandmother vintage. And the bed was comfortably worn. Not what I consider to be 5-star rating as their site claims.
- The hotel has a sustainability certification.
