Built just a few years ago, Amainah is one of the handful of high-end hotels that have suddenly popped up in Bacalar, Mexico, in the Yucatan. This small lakeside town on the gorgeous seven-colored lagoon was mostly unheard of ten years ago, but has become one of Mexico’s newest and most popular destinations for travelers who prefer their vacations mellow and nature-centered.

Amainah hotel sits on the southern end of the town’s coastal road, far enough from other hotels and the downtown docks to exude exclusivity and luxurious isolation. Most guests camp out on the hotel’s back deck and don’t move for the rest of their visit.

A half a dozen loungers, a couple nest-like woven pods, and the hotel’s swimming pool all grace the back patio, and there are some outdoor couches at the end of their dock that look out over the lagoon. There is also an interior lookout lounge with chairs and tables for a view of the lagoon with the comfort of indoors.

The architectural style – Alberto Kalach industrialism meets beachfront bohemian – combines exposed stone walls, ceramic latticework that separates bathrooms from sleeping areas, palapa-roofed private terraces, and oversized art installations.

All sixteen rooms are lagoon-facing with private terraces that include black woven hammocks and deck furniture. There are four rooms with private soaking pools, two with bathtubs, eight doubles, and two king-size rooms. All rooms include a stocked minifridge, Nepresso coffee machines, robes, slippers, safes, and air conditioning. A simple grey, black, and brown decor scheme leaves the color to the viewer.

Amainah has an upstairs dining room area for getting out of the heat in the spring and summer months, but you can also enjoy meals and drinks al fresco on the back patio. The bar-tending staff is friendly and accommodating, and they have a nice menu of house cocktails as well as the classics. Breakfast here is top-notch. I highly recommend the chilaquiles with castacán, a kind of fried pork crackling common to Yucatecan cuisine.

The hotel works closely with Adventure Lab tours that take groups out in pontoon boats or catamarans and give visitors some context and history about the lagoon and its important role in the local ecosystem and biodiversity. If your goal is luxurious relaxation, Amainah is a great option in Bacalar. Rooms are around 250usd and above, depending on the season.
