When I first laid eyes on the Delta Bessborough in Saskatoon, I felt as though I had stumbled upon a castle straight out of Europe. But with a distinctly Canadian twist. Towering turrets, elegant stonework, and sprawling riverside gardens give the hotel a majestic appearance. Often referred to as “the castle on the river,” this historic landmark sits on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River.
For nearly a century, the Delta Hotels Bessborough has been a gathering place for locals and travelers alike. Its refined elegance is a much different vibe from funkier hotels in the vicinity.
The hotel has hosted royalty, dignitaries, and celebrities. Yet, it still feels warm and welcoming to everyday travelers like me. I couldn’t wait to explore both the rich history of the property and the modern comforts it offers today.
Tasteful rooms with classic decor
I was travelling with a friend, so we decided on a river view room with two Queen beds. The furnishings were tasteful without being overdone. A comfortable oversized chair sat by the window, while a writing desk equipped with power outlets took care of my computer and work needs.

Practical touches included a mini-fridge, a coffee and tea maker for early mornings. As a Marriott Bonvoy member, I appreciated the complimentary Wi-Fi.
The Delta Hotels Bessborough also offers rooms with a King bed and suites with extra space and sofa beds. Plus, a one-bedroom suite offers more room to stretch out. River view rooms are a bit more expensive, but worth it.
Traveling with pets? Up to two furry companions (50 lb or less) are welcome for a small fee.
Ways to unwind at the Delta Hotels Bessborough
I woke myself up in the fitness center every morning. It was equipped with stationary bikes, elliptical machines, and weights. The indoor pool and hot tub provided me with ways to unwind after walking the city. I particularly enjoyed the pool area, which overlooked the hotel’s famous gardens.

I didn’t get a chance to use it, but I noticed the Damara Day Spa offered a menu of relaxing massages and treatments.
Grand spaces and gatherings
For those visiting on business or celebrating a special occasion, the Delta Hotels Bessborough has nearly 18,000 square feet of event space. A grand ballroom makes you feel like you’re part of a bygone era. The gardens themselves are a peaceful retreat. In addition, they are popular for weddings, festivals, and community events, including the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival.
Prairie-inspired dining at Delta Hotels Bessborough
The dining options here struck a balance between indulgent and approachable. I started my mornings at the Garden Court Café, where breakfast was hearty and flavorful. The short rib Benedict was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Another day I tried the spicy chorizo omelette, packed with just the right punch of flavor.

Lunch at the café offered a range of options. These included fish tacos, flavorful sliders, and a comforting beef stew. Plus, there was lighter fare like salads and wraps. The use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients gave everything a prairie flair. On the weekend, brunch was the star—think fluffy pancakes, savory egg dishes, and fresh pastries, all enjoyed with views of the gardens.
One of my favorite experiences was the afternoon tea, which runs from March through November. Between 2 and 4 pm, the café transforms into a refined space. They serve delicate sandwiches, freshly baked scones, and bite-sized pastries paired with an elegant tea selection. It felt like stepping back in time.
Some evenings were spent at Stovin’s Lounge. This cozy bar serves craft cocktails and an array of elevated bar fare. From flatbreads to burgers, it was a comfy spot to hang out with friends and enjoy a drink .

A grand hotel’s story
The Delta Hotels Bessborough’s story is as fascinating as its architecture. After the Canadian Pacific Railway built a grand hotel in Regina in 1926, Saskatoon’s business community lobbied for one of its own. The Canadian National Railway answered the call. It commissioned architects John S. Archibald and John Schofield to design what would become one of Canada’s grand railway hotels.
Construction began in 1930, but the Great Depression delayed the opening until 1935. When it finally welcomed its first guest, the hotel was the tallest building in Saskatoon. Over the decades, it has changed ownership several times, undergone extensive restorations, and hosted a who’s who of notable figures.
Its Châteauesque design—complete with turrets, dormers, grotesques, and intricate stonework—was inspired by Bavarian castles. A signature look of Canada’s railway hotels.
Walking through the public spaces, I was captivated by the historic details, including ornate ceiling moldings and terrazzo floors. It felt like Gothic Revival grandeur shot through with prairie warmth.
Exploring Saskatoon from the castle on the river
The Delta Hotels Bessborough’s location couldn’t be better. Tucked into the southeastern edge of Saskatoon’s Central Business District, it’s within walking distance of many attractions. I strolled past a gazebo in Kiwanis Park, which flanks the hotel on both sides, and enjoyed riverfront views from the nearby Broadway Bridge.

Art lovers will appreciate the proximity to the Remai Modern gallery and the Remai Arts Centre, while shoppers can head to Midtown Plaza. TCU Place, the city’s main convention and performing arts centre, is also close by. For a dose of history, the former Saskatoon railway station, now a National Historic Site and museum, is just a short walk away.
If you’re planning a trip to the “city of bridges,” the Delta Hotels Bessborough is more than just a hotel—it’s a destination steeped in history and wrapped in elegance. Plus, it is conveniently placed for exploring Saskatoon.
