Where do you stay in San Antonio when Fiesta fever takes hold of the city? I don’t hesitate. I roll up to The Westin Riverwalk, San Antonio, in an Uber that mirrors San Antonio’s style – a bold cherry red Tesla, where a bellman swings open the door and welcomes me and Mum—my ever-game travel partner—into a lobby that pulses with fiesta fever.
Inside, there’s a boundless energy. Fresh florals burst with color, guests swirl through arrivals and departures, and there’s a subtle electricity that signals something special is underway. It’s Friday, and that’s prime turnover time. Vacationers are skedaddling in, and business travelers are heading home. Many hotel guests these days, I’m finding, are reverting to the paperless, contact-less digital option to check in and check out. But I still look forward to the personal contact and hospitality of the hotel staff, so we paused and watched the scenes unfold.
I’ve walked into this ‘living’ room, taking a front-row seat to one of America’s most spirited cultural celebrations.
Location, Location, Location
The Westin Riverwalk San Antonio stakes its claim on one of the most coveted stretches of the San Antonio River Walk. The 14-story hotel (no 13th floor, a nod to classic superstition) places you directly in the cultural bloodstream of the city.
If the San Antonio River is the life of the city, the locals are its soul. With this in mind, WE knew finding local experiences, especially related to fiesta and dining, shouldn’t be too difficult. We were right. The Westin Riverwalk San Antonio is near to award-winning restaurants like Shilo’s, the city’s oldest German-Texan deli diner. And if we’re talking oldest, The Alamo and the Majestic Theatre are two incredible landmarks, each unique, and both are close to the hotel.
Now, for gals in need of hairspray (we left ours behind for carry-on packing purposes), there’s a handy CVS pharmacy just around the corner. And, for others who love to walk and sightsee, you can’t get any closer than this destination. Mind you, I discovered a few other riverfront hotels, but this hotel brand, if you’re familiar with the Marriott Bonvoy concept, should certainly make you smile.
First Impressions
The hotel, large enough to accommodate a wide spectrum of clients (it’s geared for corporate and leisure travelers), meets the needs of both. I was there, with a media group attending San Antonio’s annual fiesta. From the front door staff to the reservation clerks, everyone was on their top A-game.
Service operates at a high caliber. Staff anticipate needs, manage volume efficiently, and maintain composure even as Fiesta crowds swell. It’s a performance aligned with the standards of Marriott International, where consistency and brand matter.
The lobby emits a refined, stately vibe where seating areas in fine fabrics and velvets complement the chic ‘old money’ mood with staggering art pieces clustered around solid wood furniture. The lounge choices have several options for languid sitting, where you can relax and wait for the next move. There are high-backed wing chairs, cozy sofas, and an assortment of coffee and end tables elegantly positioned by plush rugs. The flow is luxury through and through. Smooth, polished marbled floors, and at one end, there’s a sweeping staircase that could rival old Texas movie classics. I’m thinking a mini staircase version from “Gone with the Wind.”
For Mum and me, the first impression lands exactly where it should, welcoming and ready to please.
Westin Riverwalk San Antonio Highlights
So, confession – it rained on our parade. We were all set to participate in the Texas Cavalier River Boat Parade, which, sadly, was a washout. However, Mum and I, it turns out, were in San Antonio to witness two monumental moments in the city’s history. Each rare spectacle, to boot, happened one after the other. And each experience had a (hotel) room with a view.
The first unbelievable highlight was the San Antonio Spurs win. Fandamonium swept the streets, and downtown thoroughfares morphed into a parade of cars. Each one honking tunes of jubilation. Some drivers exited this bumper-to-bumper parking lot to shake hands with fellow drivers. Others waved flags – it was magnanimous! The night, after all, saw the San Antonio Spurs defeat the Portland Trail Blazers in a raucous 114-95 score. It was Game 5 where they won their first playoff round in nine years!
The other highlight, a more historical one, was the severe heavy rains that pummeled San Antonio so heavily that the long-awaited annual Texas Cavaliers River Parade was sadly canceled. Now, how is this a highlight related to the hotel? Instead, WE left the hotel lobby kitted out in fiesta flare and were whisked off to the convention center for a fabulous Plan B fiesta.

It was an evening of food, drink, music, and dance that gave us the extraordinary chance to meet and be welcomed by the mayor and the president of Visit San Antonio. We even bumped into friendly, familiar staff from the Governor’s Office. WE also got to see the true spirit of San Antonians! This community has a steely resolve and an all-around positive outlook that didn’t let rain showers dampen their spirits.
Of course, the other highlight is having the president of the Fiesta Commission stay here. There was a full-out VIP convoy of Harley-driving police officers parked and at the ready at all times!
It was amazing to see how quickly Fiesta San Antonio Commission insiders could pivot.
Room Pluses
Our city-view guest room offers a calm counterpoint to the vibrancy outside. The design leans classic: neutral palettes, framed artwork, and soft textiles that create a sense of understated comfort. At night, noise levels remain impressively low. I find this to be a crucial detail for travelers seeking rest amid celebration. Functionality is well executed. A proper work desk, generous storage, and a well-appointed bathroom with tub and rain shower, and enough sink counter space for two gals to spread out personal toiletries in this shared space. We appreciate the full-length door bathroom mirror. When you swing it out enough, it gives back hair views, the kind you need when you’re spritzing and zhuzhing yourself. Mum settles in effortlessly, claiming her bedside table while I take in the view.
We talk more than we scroll. Travel, in this moment, becomes about connection.
That said, a few inconsistencies surface. Robes and slippers, listed among amenities, are absent—small but notable oversights at this tier. For a brand synonymous with wellness and comfort, these details should align with expectations.
Hotel Perks
Westin’s wellness-forward philosophy is evident. The outdoor pool offers a refreshing break between excursions, while the fitness center caters to guests maintaining routine on the road.
The hotel’s pet-friendly policy broadens its appeal, welcoming four-legged companions into the experience. Meanwhile, a small on-site salon adds a distinctly local touch—because in San Antonio, style matters, and bigger hair is always better.
These amenities reinforce the hotel’s positioning as a full-service urban retreat, balancing leisure with lifestyle.

Morning unfolds at Zocca Cuisine D’Italia, the hotel’s river-facing restaurant. The setting is light-filled and inviting, with the River Walk just beyond—a prime vantage point when weather permits al fresco dining.

Our breakfast is simple yet satisfying. Omelets and poached eggs atop avocado toast arrive fresh and well-executed. For guests on tighter schedules, Cafecito delivers efficiency. Starbucks coffee, pastries, and grab-and-go options ensure no one leaves under-fuelled—a practical addition that enhances your fiesta needs.
Final Impressions
Rain drenches Fiesta, yet The Westin Riverwalk, San Antonio, holds its glow. Mum and I pivot from parade plans to spontaneous moments, discovering a city—and a hotel—that thrives on resilience, warmth, and effortless hospitality.
Service is polished and consistent, a hallmark of Marriott International. The unbeatable perch along the San Antonio River Walk keeps everything within reach, though minor lapses like missing robes remind you that perfection still has edges.
What endures is the feeling: shared laughter, Fiesta spirit, and the buzz of a San Antonio Spurs win echoing through downtown. A stay at this prized property elevates expectations, making it a compelling, book-worthy San Antonio escape.
