Three days in the Windy City and my passport’s inked in soul.
The rhythm of Chicago pulses through my veins like a Muddy Waters riff. I arrive at the Marriott Marquis Chicago, a sleek and soulful giant in the city’s south side, fresh from rubbing shoulders with thousands of global travel pros at America’s biggest trade event—IPW 2025. It’s where the world meets the USA, and this year, Chicago owns the spotlight.
The city crackles with kinetic energy, a Midwestern metropolis that matches my hometown of Toronto for heart, hustle, and heritage. As Twin Cities across the Great Lakes, we share more than latitude. We vibe on that sweet blend of business and pleasure. From McCormick Place to Michigan Avenue, this town roars.
And right in the center of the action? The towering, glass-clad marvel known as the Marriott Marquis Chicago. My new headquarters. At 40 stories, this 1,205-room stunner is Chicago’s answer to the ultimate stay-meets-play-meets-power-suit haven.
To boot, my Marriott Bonvoy account gleams with points. I stride into this mega-huge property, flash my Bonvoy Elite card at the reservation desk, and instantly feel like a VIP. As a Bonvoy member, I tap into exclusive lounge access, priority reservations at Woven & Bound and the Showroom Food Hall, and elite-rate deals that make brutal travel budgets sing.
The building gleams from every angle: glass tower rising behind the historic ABC facade, zig‑zag LED accents wrapping around, and that bold red Marriott “M” proclaiming a welcome as loud as a Chicago blues solo.
Outside, I walk through an open-air art gallery. A rotating collection of Chicago artists spills onto exterior walls. I marvel at a red, folding-forms sculpture nicknamed “The Bots” under the walkway. Bold and playful, Chicago-based sculptors and a NY design firm collaborated to create them for the property.
Welcome to the crossroads of cool and corporate.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
You couldn’t script this better if you tried. The Marriott Marquis anchors the South Loop, a neighborhood fast becoming the city’s hippest history lesson. Here’s your cheat sheet: a stone’s throw away is the legendary Chess Records Studio, where the Rolling Stones, Etta James, Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters once belted out tracks that changed music forever. The building still stands. If walls could talk? They’d sing.
Just around the corner: the Platt Luggage Building. Once a manufacturing hub for hard-shell valises and leather-bound dreams, this structure reminds you that travel—like Chicago—is built to last. And then there’s the ABC Building, short for the American Book Company. This 5-story brick beauty distributed textbooks throughout the Midwest. It’s bookish, brainy, and beautifully restored.
Turns out it is now part of the Marriott Marquis hotel. Walk through the breezeway (albeit prepare to hike) and voilà—you’re in McCormick Place, the largest convention center in North America. A behemoth of ideas, showcases, and connections. The Marriott didn’t just have a room; it gave me runway access to the U.S. travel industry’s biggest stage.
SUITE HIGHLIGHTS

Author Ilona Kauremszky on location at the Marriott Marquis Chicago.
Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the city view from my double queen bedroom suite. I flop onto one of my beds (clouds, basically) and my eyes land on the oversized TV—hello, post-convention wind-down. The pillowtop mattress helps ease out the daily kinks from the loads of IPW press breakfasts, press conferences, meetings, and nightly receptions. But we’re not complaining! The bed was the perfect answer to a full day’s roster of travel schmoozing.
There was a mod-cool chaise by the window that invited me to lounge during a short downtime spell. There was a desk with ergonomic everything for last-minute story notes, plus lighting that made my selfie game look filtered IRL (that’s DM lingo for ‘in real life ‘ :-)).
A mini fridge for storing my snacks and beverages. A coffee maker for the prerequisite wake-up caffeine jolt that quickly became a morning convention ritual.
Closet space, cupboard space, and the bathroom? Spa-vibe heaven. Big glass shower. Crisp towels. Backlit mirror that makes even red-eye travelers look runway-ready. Bonus quirk: USB ports. I plug in multiple devices without ever touching my charger. It’s the little things.

The fourth floor is a jackpot of amenities. First, the fitness center. Massive, with skyline views that make treadmill time feel like a scene from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Tread, pump, repeat—then pop over to the M Club Lounge, a chill zone with healthy nibbles, coffee that packs a punch, and corners made for travel hacks and industry gossip.
Now here’s the kicker: the hotel connects directly to McCormick Place via an enclosed skybridge. No coat, no cab, no chaos. From press conferences to meet-and-greets, if you’re prepared to do an indoor hike from the hotel to the convention center, then go for it!
Even better? The CTA Green Line stop is just steps away. That’s my ticket to Hyde Park and the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry—a must-see temple of innovation. Home to the U-505 submarine, a United Airlines Boeing 727 suspended from the ceiling you can walk through, and dazzling exhibits that make you feel like you’re time-traveling. Close by is also where the future Barack Obama Presidential Center is slated to rise. History is always under construction here.
FOOD + DRINK SCENE

Hungry but in between panels? Enter the Showroom Food Hall on the hotel’s first floor. It’s a buzzing hive of grab-and-go deliciousness. Tacos, wood-fired pizza, locally brewed craft beers—every bite screams Chicago flavor without the formality. I down a killer beef taco while charging my phone and chatting with a fellow travel BDM from Toronto.
For something snazzier, head to Woven & Bound, the hotel’s signature restaurant. Modern American with a twist, their roasted Brussels sprouts have fan clubs. The vibe is equal parts cocktail cool and dinner-meets-deal. It’s where conference talk turns to real talk over a Manhattan and a Wagyu burger.
FINAL IMPRESSIONS

Whether you’re here to network with 5,000 delegates at IPW or retrace the bluesy backbeats of music legends, the Marriott Marquis Chicago puts you in the best seat in the house. Everything is engineered for motion, connection, and inspiration.
Two standout reasons this property is a travel nerd’s dream:
1. Seamless convention connectivity: From bed to badge without stepping outside during bad weather bouts.
2. Location that layers culture, history, and local flavor: Where else can you sleep next to the legacy of Route 66, and hum Etta James in the elevator?
The city’s prepping for the country’s 250th birthday and the 100th anniversary of Route 66 next year.
But here’s my tip: book now. Chicago’s blowing up with blockbuster energy, and the Marriott Marquis Chicago? That’s your front-row seat to the show.

Great overview of the Marriott Marquis Chicago and its vibrant location! Quick question: Does the Bonvoy Elite status offer any perks for dining besides priority reservations? Thanks!
Hi Élodie,
Thanks for the kudos! I find that with your points, you can request an instant redemption for perks like dining, cocktails, even spa and golf. Also, it depends on your tier with elite status. For instance, if you have Platinum Elite Status, you have a welcome gift choice. Upon arrival, you can choose between points or a breakfast offering. For more Bonvoy Elite member details, check out https://www.marriott.com/loyalty/member-benefits.mi. Happy travels!
Nice read — useful overview of the Marquis and its location. Quick question: for Bonvoy elites, how reliable are the lounge access and priority reservations during big events like IPW? Also, did you notice any difference in room upgrades or late checkout availability at peak convention times?
