If you find yourself in Athens, Greece, and you’re looking for a luxurious hotel room, I have a recommendation for you. InterContinental Athenaeum Athens, with Acropolis views, was my ticket to a restful sleep. This 5-star Athens hotel was located in the Kallithea neighborhood with a Metro station nearby.

We had originally booked this IHG hotel for the night prior to our Greek island sailing adventure. Others on our cruise were being picked up at the Holiday Inn Athens Airport hotel, so we booked there and saved our InterContinental Athenaeum Athens stay for the end of our Greek holiday. I’m happy that we saved this hotel for our last day in Athens, as it gave us one final look at the Acropolis.
This was our first time staying at the InterContinental Athenaeum Athens hotel. However, it was not our first stay at an IHG InterContinental hotel. From InterContinental Barcelona to the San Diego-based IHG, there’s something special about a 5-star hotel. No one at the front desk gives me the side eye when I arrive at reception carrying my backpack. Everyone from housekeepers to concierge people treated me like royalty. Sometimes, after 24 hours of transatlantic airline travel flying economy class, all I want is a friendly smile and the keys to a luxurious hotel room. InterContinental Athens delivered.

InterContinental Athenaeum Athens room categories
I didn’t stop to admire the modern art on display in the lobby. Instead, I went straight to our hotel room on the 7th floor. With 563 rooms and nine floors, there were plenty of room categories on offer. We had reserved a king classic for our one-night stay. Fortunately, as an IHG rewards member, the hotel had availability to upgrade us to a king premium with an Acropolis view. I confess that I was hoping for a Club Lounge-level room or access to the Club Lounge on the 8th floor. Access to the Club Lounge could be purchased for 100 euros.

We did enjoy our premium king room, #706, with a desk, flat screen television, and a luxurious bathroom. The room also included robes and slippers, as well as a coffee maker, tea kettle, and filtered water. It should be noted that Athens has very good quality drinking water. We were not aware that most Greek islands did not have potable water until we embarked on our Greek Island cruise on a small yacht.

Dining at InterContinental Athens
There were several restaurants and bars at the InterContinental Athenaeum Athens hotel, in addition to the Club Lounge. We had wisely booked our hotel room to include the breakfast buffet. Otherwise, the breakfast buffet would have cost 36 euros per person.
The breakfast buffet offered a large selection of hot and cold items, including creamy scrambled eggs, meats and sausages, yogurts, fresh fruit, pastries, and baklava! Similar to InterContinental Dublin, the hot chocolate was delicious. My husband enjoyed the unlimited espresso coffee refills and fresh orange juice.

Athenaeum Athens hotel amenities
In addition to the I-Spa and 24-hour Fitness Center, there was an outdoor swimming pool on the lower level of the hotel. We visited in October when no one was using the pool.

Depending on the time of year you visit Athens, rates vary seasonally. Our king room cost 282 euros or $329.43, including buffet breakfast for two persons and tax in mid-October. The hotel was not pet-friendly. There was a 24 euro daily self-parking fee with unlimited in and out privileges.
