Hampton Inn & Suites Windsor

I checked into the Hampton Inn & Suites Windsor with modest expectations. This is a familiar brand, after all, one I have stayed at dozens of times across the country. But I left with a good impression of the Windsor Hotel as a base for exploring Sonoma County wine country.

Windsor does not always get the same attention as Healdsburg or Sonoma, but that is part of its appeal. Staying here gave me easy access to wine country while offering a quieter pace at the end of the day. The hotel turned out to be a practical, comfortable, and surprisingly pleasant place to return to after long days of tasting, walking, and exploring.

Location: Well Placed for Wine Country

The Hampton Inn & Suites Windsor sits just off Highway 101, which makes it an easy stop whether you are driving north toward Mendocino or south toward Santa Rosa and the Sonoma Valley. To my surprise, the area is now also accessible via SMART (Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit), so you can get from BART in San Francisco to the area without a car. While this was big news locally, I missed the memo.

The hotel has ample free parking and even EV charging. The hotel is smoke-free.

Downtown Windsor, centered around the town green, is only a few minutes away by car. We have stopped at the town green on previous trips for one of the many festivals that the city hosts.

From the hotel, you can reach Healdsburg in about ten minutes, the Alexander Valley in less than 20 minutes, Dry Creek Valley in even less, and the Russian River not much farther.

Public Spaces: Welcoming and Functional

Walking into the lobby, I was greeted by a space that felt bright, open, and easy to use. Hampton Inns tend to prioritize function, and this one does it well without feeling bland. There are comfortable seating areas for working, reading, or chatting, along with small tables that make it easy to spread out a laptop or enjoy a coffee.

The front desk staff set a friendly tone from the start, and check-in was smooth. It was the front desk staff who informed me about SMART, as the hotel has had special promotions to welcome the train to Windsor.

The doors at the far end of the lobby open to the breakfast buffet in the morning, as this area becomes the breakfast room.

Room Features: Reliable Comfort After a Long Day

My room was exactly what I hoped for after full days of exploring Sonoma County. It was clean, spacious, and thoughtfully laid out, with enough room to relax rather than just sleep. It was easily twice the size of some hotel rooms I have had this year.

The bed was comfortable, with supportive pillows that made it easy to unwind. Climate control worked efficiently, which matters more after warm summer afternoons spent driving through vineyards. Wi Fi was fast and reliable, allowing me to upload photos and plan the next day without frustration.

The room included a flat screen TV, a small refrigerator, a microwave, a coffee maker, an ironing board, and an iron, all useful touches if you are staying more than one night. I appreciated the generous desk space and accessible power outlets, details that often separate a good hotel room from a merely adequate one.

The bathroom was clean and well-lit, with good water pressure in the shower. Everything worked as it should. The sink area was in the main bedroom instead of behind the bathroom door. I mention this in case you are traveling with someone else and you keep different sleep schedules.

Special Features: A Pet-Friendly

One of the standout aspects of this Hampton Inn & Suites is its pet-friendly policy for animals 75 lbs and smaller. There is a non-refundable fee of $75.00.

While this is not a boutique or historic property, it does offer something just as valuable for many travelers: consistency. You know what you are getting, and at this location, it is delivered with care.

The hotel also reflects Hilton’s broader sustainability efforts, from efficient lighting to towel reuse programs. These touches are subtle but appreciated, especially for travelers who care about reducing their impact without sacrificing comfort.

You can use your Hilton Honors app as your electronic room key.

Food and Dining: A Solid Start to the Day

Breakfast is included, which is one reason Hampton Inns remain popular. Each morning, I found a well-stocked breakfast area with hot and cold options. The room smells of baked goods and guest-made waffles.

There were eggs, breakfast meats, waffles, pastries, yogurt, fruit, and oatmeal, along with coffee and tea. Everything was kept clean and replenished, even during busier times. I found it easy to grab a full meal before heading out for the day, which helped streamline my mornings.

The hotel does not have a full-service restaurant or bar, but Windsor and nearby towns more than make up for that. The front desk can provide solid recommendations, from casual dining in Windsor to standout restaurants in Healdsburg.

Outdoor pool

Facilities and Amenities: Simple but Useful

The outdoor pool area is a pleasant place to unwind, especially on warm Sonoma County afternoons. It includes a hot tub and seating that encourages lingering before heading out to dinner.

Fitness center

The fitness center is well equipped for a hotel of this size, with cardio machines, weights, and enough space to move comfortably.

There is a small shop by the front desk, as is typical of the hotel chain, but with this being a wine region, it is stocked with much more wine than you would find elsewhere in the country.

Things Nearby: Exploring Windsor and Sonoma County

Staying in Windsor put me close to some of Sonoma County’s best experiences without feeling surrounded by crowds. Wineries were a short drive away, and I found it easy to plan half-day outings without feeling rushed. On this trip, we enjoyed tastings at both Notre Vue Estate and Winery and Limerick Lane Cellars.

Healdsburg’s tasting rooms, shops, and restaurants were close by, while Windsor itself offered a quieter alternative in the evenings. The Town Green hosts events throughout the year, from farmers markets to concerts, adding a local flavor to a stay here.

New to me on this trip was the Windsor’s Beverage District, which included wineries (of course) but also a few breweries, a distillery, and even a cidery. We had a lovely lunch at nearby  Russian River Brewing.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find easy access to cycling routes, river activities along the Russian River, and scenic drives through vineyard-covered hills. Even a simple morning walk around Windsor revealed parks, trails, and neighborhood cafes worth exploring.

Final Thoughts: A Dependable Choice in Wine Country

The Hampton Inn & Suites Windsor may not be the most glamorous hotel in Sonoma County, but that is not a drawback. It delivers exactly what many travelers need: comfort, convenience, and good value, all in a location that makes exploring the region easy.

As someone who has stayed in plenty of hotels over the years, I appreciated how this property handled the basics well while offering a genuinely welcoming experience.  If you are planning a trip to Sonoma County and want a practical, comfortable base with easy access to wine country highlights, the Hampton Inn & Suites Windsor is a solid choice that quietly does its job very well.
