voco Times Square South New York: Brrr-ing in the NYC Hits

author ilona kauremszkyOn my recent winter romp to NYC, you’d think a Polar Vortex would hold me back.

But as the temperatures continued to nosedive, the heat totally turned up with sizzling offers that saw me catch a roster of shows—daytime business with nighttime leisure—knowing all the while my rest time was the voco Times Square South New York, an IHG Hotel brand.

Brrr, it’s cold outside. Not so much at these indoor haunts.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

voco Times Square South New York is strategically positioned for business and leisure travelers. A short walk to the Javits Convention Center made attending full-day appointments with some of the travel industry’s biggest influencers a breeze @TravMedia #IMMNYC. And when the workday wrapped, Broadway was just a short metro ride away—perfect for my back-to-back show schedule.

Ilona and George Clooney

The absolute highlight? Sitting next to George Clooney at Left on Tenth, a gripping production starring his former ER co-star Julianna Margulies and the always-dashing Peter Gallagher. WOW, what a night!

For my final night in the Big Apple, I wrapped up my Broadway streak with the hauntingly beautiful Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre—an experience that will stay with me long after the winter frost melts.

HOTEL HIGHLIGHTS

lounge

voco Times Square South New York threw open its doors to welcome travelers with open arms and was unveiled on December 6, 2021, through a partnership between IHG Hotels & Resorts and Ascott Residence Trust. Since opening during the pandemic, this urban retreat has quickly carved out a name for itself in the heart of the Big Apple.

City views? Check. Convenient amenities? Double check. But what sets this hotel apart is its stunning transformation by the award-winning Blackney Hayes. This 25-story, 224-room gem now flaunts a modern aesthetic with the right touch of whimsy. As soon as you enter the lobby, you’re wrapped in a palette of warm earth tones accented by sleek contemporary finishes. Framed by statement lighting, the check-in area makes you feel like you’ve entered an exclusive New York retreat.

Upstairs, the guest rooms blend functionality with flair—think custom furnishings, soft-hued textiles, and eye-catching artwork that nods to the city’s iconic skyline.

My Premium Full Room City View offered floor-to-ceiling windows allowing me to soak up the iconic city views. The efficient layout in this 215-square-foot room makes every inch count. Bragging rights? This stylish haven is not just another Times Square stay—it’s a masterclass in how to do boutique hospitality right.

GrabnGo

The hotel’s casual dining options made grab-and-go a breeze, while the ever-available hot chocolate station kept me cozy amidst the frigid weather. The inviting lounge was my sanctuary after long days, whether curling up with a good book or indulging in some guilt-free social media scrolling. The ambiance was just the right balance of chic and comfort—a true urban retreat.

RoomSUITE NOTES

The view was quintessential NYC and room size was typical, but for a solo traveler like me, it did the job well. The in-room coffee machine (too bad it wasn’t Mr. George Clooney with his Nespresso coffee) was a welcome morning boost, and the flatscreen TV kept me updated on the latest winter storm warnings. Blackout curtains ensured a deep sleep, and the hotel’s location on 36th Street meant a peaceful night away from the cacophony of Broadway’s late-night buzz. Next time, I need to tick off NYC’s annual “Winter Show” at the Park Avenue Armory from my must-do list.

PERKS

Hotel guests receive a QR code bookmark itemizing complimentary goodies—from a $10 nightly dinner credit to a welcome specialty drink upon arrival. News hounds will appreciate the onsite digital library, while fitness fans can register for an on-demand class on the Peloton bike. And let’s talk about those voco Finch slippers—absolute lifesavers for those cold NYC hotel floors.

Are these perks? You decide. The above is cloaked as a “Resort Fee,” of which mine was a daily $25 amenity fee so in my book, not so much a perk.

To bring it into perspective, lobby popcorn was refreshed daily, as was the DIY hot chocolate dispenser stocked with marshmallows and coated candies—small joys on a wintry NYC evening.

OVERALL IMPRESSION

voco Times Square South hits the sweet spot between boutique charm and practical convenience. It’s a solid choice for travelers searching for an elevated stay without breaking the bank. The service is warm, the perks (while disguised under a fee) add a touch of comfort, and the location makes it a prime launchpad for city adventures. Whether you’re Broadway-bound, business-focused, or just here for the vibes, this spot delivers.
