If you find yourself traveling to Sydney, Australia, know that cultural, culinary, shopping, entertainment, and recreational opportunities abound. My friend Alana and I arrived in advance of our Viking Cruise Ship Orion departure from Sydney, Australia, to Bali, Indonesia. Furthermore, we had only two days to discover our interests. After surveying several of her friends on where best to stay, Alana told me that unanimously, all her contacts advised Darling Harbour.

The Location

Darling Harbour is a harbor and neighborhood adjacent to the city center of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The precinct is home to a number of major public facilities and attractions, including:

  • Cockle Bay Wharf (restaurants, bars, and Home nightclub – one of Australia’s largest nightclubs)
  • IMAX Sydney theatre
  • Paddy’s Markets
  • Queen Victoria Building
  • Townhall Train Station
  • Chinese Garden of Friendship
  • Tumbalong Park
  • Darling Quarter Playground and cafes
  • Australian National Maritime Museum
  • The Star Casino & Entertainment Complex
  • Powerhouse Museum
  • Sea Life Sydney Aquarium
  • Madame Tussauds
  • Wildlife Sydney Zoo
  • Aboriginal Centre
  • International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney)
  • Darling Square (a modern complex of specialty shops, eateries, and bars in South Darling Harbour, which features Darling Square Library)

In addition, the hotel is only a 10-minute drive from the iconic Sydney Opera House.

The Hotel

The YEHS Hotel Sydney Harbour Suites is one of those sweet hotel surprises that is like finding an affordable diamond amongst a sea of expensive, luxury high-rise jewels. Because here in the popular part of Sydney known as Darling Harbour, almost the entirety of accommodations tends to be very pricey. Think luxury and ultra-luxury, along with sky-high prices. But Sydney Harbour Suites proves to be quite affordable for what it offers in terms of location, value, and convenience. Rated 4 stars, the hotel offers luggage storage as well as ticket service and tours.

Strategically located at 258 Sussex Street, it is only a 5-minute walk from the harbor with its myriad of restaurants and nightlife.

This beautifully appointed hotel boasts an impressive range of modern self-contained apartments and penthouse suites, in various sizes and configurations to suit every stay. A modest spa with a hot tub, sauna, and indoor swimming pool is located on the property. During our time waiting to check in, we saw airline crews, locals, and international travelers waiting their turn in the cozy lobby. Like most Australian city and resort hotels, check-in is at 3:00 pm while check-out is at 10:00 am. Please note that late fees will be charged. Nice to know that an express check-out is available. Also, a 2% credit card payment fee is charged if paying with anything other than cash. I have experienced this policy in many places throughout Australia. And finally, no pets are allowed.

The Room

Our 260 square foot room was classified as a Premium Queen with a kitchenette. We were easily able to convert the Queen to two Twin Beds for no extra fee.

While I would be hesitant in claiming this is as spacious as some guests have reviewed, the room was adequate in layout and very efficient in design.

The room included standard amenities such as a television, minibar, refrigerator, and coffee maker. And since we had a kitchenette suite, cooking utensils, dining plates, and cutlery were available for eating in if we chose.

The Rates

For the best rates online as well as special package offerings, book directly with the hotel. Or check Expedia.com for competitive prices. Depending on day of the week, season, and room type, rates run from a low of around $207 per night USD inclusive of taxes for a Premium Queen with Kitchenette. Normal price in season hovers around $253 per night USD, inclusive of taxes. Or you can choose a Business Double Room from about $110 USD per night, inclusive of taxes. Look for specials advertised on their website.

The Bottom Line

  • The YEHS Hotel Sydney Harbour Suites is a very popular hotel with locals, families as well as international travelers because of its prime location and excellent value. But it is the same reason that reservations are essential, so you don’t end up disappointed.
  • The complimentary self-serve Nespresso coffee bar in the lobby is an unexpected and yet delightful surprise. With 5 choices of coffee pods available, it is a welcome touch of sophisticated luxury.
  • Prime location to many different restaurants on the dock, as well as nearby Chinatown.
  • Comfortable beds and bedding ensure quality sleep.
  • Breakfast is not included nor available on-site. However, there is a small coffee shop next door and also a more substantial restaurant to the right as you exit the hotel. In particular, the restaurant offers many delectable choices.
  • Self-parking is available onsite.
  • Airport shuttle is available for an additional fee.
