Las Vegas, a city known for its dazzling lights, iconic entertainment, and 24/7 energy, offers a kaleidoscope of experiences for every type of traveler. Deciding where to stay is as much a part of planning your Vegas adventure as choosing your shows and dinner reservations. When I look at hotels in Vegas there are three distinct areas: the Strip, off the Strip, and Downtown. Each offers its own flavor of Las Vegas magic. Here’s a breakdown to help you choose the best spot for your stay.

The Strip: Glitz, Glamour, and Convenience
When you think of Las Vegas, the Strip is likely what comes to mind. Stretching 4.2 miles, this iconic boulevard is a parade of world-famous resorts, each boasting its own theme and attractions. Each of these hotels tends to be massive and lively. 5 of the world’s 10 largest hotels are on the strip, including The Venetian Resort, MGM Grand Las Vegas, Wynn Las Vegas & Encore Resort, Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, and Luxor Las Vegas.
What to Expect
- Entertainment at Your Doorstep: Staying on the Strip means you’re just steps away from headline shows, fine dining, and nightlife. Whether it’s Cirque du Soleil at the MGM Grand or a rooftop cocktail at The Cosmopolitan, you’ll never run out of options.
- Luxury and Variety: From budget-friendly options like Excalibur to high-end sanctuaries like The Wynn, there’s something for everyone.
- High Energy: The Strip never sleeps. If you thrive on constant activity, this is your spot.
Insider Tip
To make the most of your time (and your feet), pick a resort mid-Strip, such as Caesars Palace or The Venetian, which gives you easy access to both ends of the boulevard. However, you don’t really know how big the hotels on the Strip are until you try to walk from one hotel to another.

Off the Strip: Tranquility Meets Affordability
For a more relaxed vibe, staying off the Strip can be a game-changer. There is off the strip, and there is way off the strip. If you stay farther from the strip you can often get a better value for your money, but… you will spend more time driving back to the strip for shows and other attractions. Some hotels like Virgin Hotel are just a few blocks away (although blocks in Las Vegas can be massive), and some, like Westin Lake Las Vegas, are 45 minutes away in Henderson.
What to Expect
- Better Value: Hotels off the Strip, like The Palms or South Point, often provide luxurious amenities at a fraction of the cost.
- Local Flavor: Venture into nearby neighborhoods to experience the real Vegas. Check out Chinatown Plaza for authentic eats.
- Space to Breathe: These resorts are less crowded, making them ideal for families or travelers who want a quieter base.
Before You Book
I will say that I have occasionally stayed in a very bad hotel room in Vegas while trying to save money. There are still some nasty hotels in Vegas, especially off the strip.
A great resource for reviewing a hotel before you book is Room Cougar. They have video tours of different hotel rooms. So you can tour the hotel from the comfort of your couch before you leave home.
They want to create videos of every hotel and cruise room around the globe. You can even make money when you contribute to Room Cougar. Create a hotel room tour that is about 1-3 minutes long. Capture all the details of the room on video and upload it to your free Room Cougar account. What you make depends on how many stars the hotel has on Expedia, Booking.com, Hotels.com, etc.

Downtown: Vintage Vegas Charm
For a taste of old-school Vegas, head downtown to Fremont Street. Staying at hotels like the historic Golden Nugget or Plaza Hotel can transport you to the days of Sinatra and the Rat Pack.
What to Expect
- Retro Vibes: The Fremont Street Experience, with its overhead light show and live entertainment, captures the spirit of vintage Vegas.
- Budget-Friendly Options: Hotels here tend to be more affordable than their Strip counterparts.
- Walkability: Downtown is compact, making it easy to explore on foot. Don’t miss a stop at Container Park, a quirky shopping and dining hub.
Insider Tip
Fremont Street is perfect for those who enjoy nightlife and people-watching but aren’t keen on the extravagance of the Strip. Bonus: It’s a short ride-share trip to the Arts District for more offbeat adventures.
Which Area Is Right for You?
- Stay on the Strip if you want to be in the heart of the action and don’t mind crowds.
- Stay off the Strip for a quieter, more affordable experience with easier access to natural attractions.
- Stay near Fremont Street for a budget-friendly base steeped in nostalgia and character.
Travel Tips for Choosing Your Las Vegas Stay
- Plan for Transportation: If you’re off the Strip or downtown, consider renting a car or budgeting for ride-shares.
- Resort Fees: Many Vegas hotels charge daily resort fees—factor this into your budget.
- Seasonal Deals: Visit in the shoulder seasons (spring and fall) for lower rates and milder weather.
Wherever you choose to stay in Las Vegas, one thing is certain: this city knows how to deliver unforgettable experiences. Whether you’re marveling at the Bellagio fountains, savoring street tacos on Fremont Street, or unwinding by a pool off the Strip, your perfect Vegas adventure awaits.
So, pack your bags, and let the neon glow guide you!
