Signia by Hilton, San Jose, California

One of the landmark hotels in Downtown San Jose, California, for many years was the Fairmont. That hotel opened in 1987 but closed during the COVID pandemic due to obvious financial issues. In 2022, Hilton reopened the hotel as the Signia by Hilton, Downtown San Jose. If you are not familiar with the Signia Brand, Jaime, the hotel’s Assistant Director, described it to us as a luxury convention hotel.

Location

The first thing you notice about Signia by Hilton is its location. This is a true downtown San Jose hotel, within sight of the San Jose McEnery Convention Center and across the street from the Plaza de Cesar Chavez. When we visited in January, the city was just packing up Christmas in the Park, which is held every year in the plaza.

If you are in town for a conference, the convenience is obvious. If you are here for leisure, the location still works in your favor. It is across the street from San Jose’s Tech Interactive Museum and next door to the San José Museum of Art. It is two blocks from the San Jose Civic Auditorium and the Hammer Theatre Center, and three blocks from the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. You can walk to San Pedro Square in about 8 minutes and to a San Jose Sharks Game in about 17 minutes.

While we drove to the hotel, light rail stops are close, making it easy to get around without a car, and Diridon Station is a short ride away if you are arriving by Caltrain or Amtrak. For those flying in, Mineta San Jose International Airport is only a few miles away, which means airport transfers are quick and painless.

In short, the Signa by Hilton is in the middle of the action.

Lobby - Signia by Hilton, Downtown San Jose, California

Public Spaces and Atmosphere

The lobby is dominated by the AJI Bar and Robata, featuring Japanese-Peruvian fusion cocktails and lite bites. The reception area is behind the bar and to the right of the main entrance on Market Street.

Because the Signia is targeting a convention business clientele, the lobby area is large, with plenty of seating for a private Tête-à-tête after the meeting. There are also some work areas set up where you can plug in your laptop at a tall table and get online to catch up on email.

Guest Room - Signia by Hilton, Downtown San Jose, California

Guest Rooms and Comfort

My room was generously sized for a downtown hotel, with a layout that made it easy to settle in. The bed was comfortable without being overly soft, the kind that supports a good night’s sleep after a long day of meetings or sightseeing.

The work desk was practical and well-lit, which matters more than many hotels seem to realize. Wi Fi was fast and reliable throughout my stay, and the large television offered a wide range of channels. There was a small fridge and a seating chair as well.

The bathroom continued the theme of modern comfort. Counter space was ample, water pressure was strong, and lighting was bright enough to be functional without feeling harsh. These details add up, especially for travelers who may be spending several nights at the hotel.

Patio - Signia by Hilton, Downtown San Jose, California

The most memorable feature of my room was that it was one of a limited number of rooms with direct access to the pool and an outside seating area with a fire table. We sat out on the patio on a chilly January evening and streamed a TV show to our tablet as we warmed by the fire. In the summer, the pool access would be even more inviting.

Special Features and What Sets It Apart

The hotel is close to the convention center, and its 2nd floor is also dedicated to meeting space, including Silicon Valley’s largest hotel ballroom and several smaller meeting rooms. It has a total of 55,000 square feet of meeting space and is equipped for weddings and events.

The hotel is also pet-friendly, which is increasingly important for travelers who want to bring their four-legged companions along. There is a $75 non-refundable fee for pets, and a maximum weight of 50 lbs.

Fitness Center - Signia by Hilton, Downtown San Jose, California

The pool has one of the best views in the city. The hotel also has a large fitness center. Both are also available to the public, as the hotel offers a daily resort pass.

Plaza de Cesar Chavez has recently added ping-pong tables and chessboards. Guests can borrow ping-pong paddles and a ball, or chess sets, to take advantage of this entertainment at the park.

Food and Dining Options

We tried the cocktails at AJI Bar and Robata the first night of our stay, and then ordered some small bites to make a dinner out of it. We ordered the potstickers, chicken wings, and prime beef Angus skewers. My wife’s favorite cocktail was the Passion Fruit Pisco Sour, but I rather liked the spicy Tsurai from their mocktail menu.

Chocolate Torte

For dessert, we tried the chocolate torte. The food was wonderful. You are going to want to put this on your expense report.

Fountain Restaurant

We ate breakfast at the Fountain restaurant, which is open for breakfast and also open on weekends for brunch. I recommend the pancakes with fresh berries and the decadent French Toast with dulce de leche. My personal favorite was the flavorful shakshuka with poached eggs in a San Marzano tomato sauce.

Things to Do Nearby

Staying at Signia by Hilton puts you within easy reach of many of downtown San Jose’s highlights. In the winter, there was still an ice skating rink open between the hotel and the San Jose Museum of Art next door.

There are lots of things do in Downtown San Jose at night, including taking in a hockey game or a live theatre show. For dining, the surrounding streets offer a range of options, from casual cafes to more refined restaurants. Check out either San Pedro Square or the smaller SoFA Market for some smaller restaurants worth a visit.

Final Thoughts

Room rates for the Signia by Hilton start at about $212, but are very dependent on the calendar for downtown events.

Check rates online at Expedia, Booking.com, Agoda.com, or Hotels.com.

Signia by Hilton, Downtown San Jose, delivers a luxury experience that works equally well for business travelers and curious visitors. It combines a prime location with comfortable rooms, thoughtful public spaces, and solid dining options.

This is not a place that isolates you from San Jose. Instead, it acts as a comfortable base from which to explore, learn, and connect.

My stay at the Signia was hosted (paid for) by the hotel. The opinions expressed are my own.
