Situated minutes from the Santa Marta airport on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, the Santa Marta Marriott Resort Playa Dormida is perfectly placed for a family vacation, whether you’re arriving from Bogota or North America.
This premium Marriott Bonvoy property, inaugurated in 2019, is the ‘big sister’ to the Courtyard Marriott Santa Marta a few miles down the beach, offering a more expansive, resort-style stay. It includes a spa, private beach, and kids’ club as part of the expanded services.
First Impressions
I visited during Holy Week, one of Colombia’s most sacred holiday weeks, and the resort was humming with families. The pool was full of children, and parents making the most of the facilities and the hotel’s ‘private’ stretch of beach. No beach in Santa Marta is truly private, but this one felt noticeably more contained and secure than the busier public beach used by the Courtyard.

Location is one of the property’s quiet strengths. It’s less than ten minutes from the airport, which makes arrivals and departures simple, yet it sits comfortably away from the hustle and bustle of Rodadero. Given the choice, this was my preferred base: close enough to the city center when you wanted a change of scenery, yet far enough away when you don’t. With a gated entrance and valet parking, security and privacy are immediately apparent.

Step into the lobby and the mood shifts to relaxed, contemporary resort comfort. Large, inviting couches, a lobby bar, and the main restaurant all open towards the Caribbean Sea. The design leans into contemporary Colombian-Caribbean style: an airy, open space in neutral tones, accented with traditional indigenous materials and art from tribes in the Sierra Nevada, which grounds the resort in its local context.
Rooms and Luxury Suites
The Santa Marta Marriott Resort Playa Dormida has 168 rooms and 14 junior suites, with combinations that range from double/double and king deluxe rooms to a one-bedroom corner suite with a massive terrace and an outdoor, private whirlpool. From the higher floors, the views take in the pool below and the line of hotels and residences along Playa Dormida.
The double room features two double beds, a desk area, and a private balcony overlooking the Caribbean Sea. In-room amenities are what you’d expect from a Marriott Bonvoy property: iron, hair dryer, toiletries, plush towels, a coffee station, and a high-definition TV with premium cable and Netflix. There’s a stocked minibar with items for purchase, and guest services extend to laundry and even grocery shopping, which is a thoughtful touch I don’t often see in resort properties. The work area is genuinely functional, with plenty of outlets for devices and a safe that can accommodate a laptop or other electronics.

For travelers who mix work and leisure or simply need to stay connected. It’s an easy room to settle into. The gold standard here is the one-bedroom suite with its large terrace and private whirlpool. With loungers and a sweeping view, it’s the kind of space where you could happily spend an entire afternoon without feeling the need to head down to the pool or beach (though I’d still argue a dip in the Caribbean is non-negotiable). The suite’s generous layout lends itself to hosting friends for a sunset cocktail.
Dining Options
On the food and drink 🍸 front, the resort offers a solid mix of options. You can embark on a culinary journey at signature restaurants 1525 and Cayeye, and enjoy cocktails at Sinku Pool Bar or Chiringuito Beach Bar. I enjoyed a lovely light lunch at 1525, which showcased the extraordinary menu. The restaurant changes from casual to upscale dining in the evening.

Executive Chef Felipe Mendoza hails from Cali, Colombia, and presented us with upscale regional delicacies that were both pleasing to the eye and enticing for the palate.
Wellness, Pool, and Beach

A highlight of my visit was a stop at the Seishua Spa. A wellness center that provides facials, massages, Turkish baths, and an outdoor whirlpool (which was not available during my visit). The private terrace invites you to pause and relax. This is not a large facility, but it is well-maintained, clean, and the staff was attentive.
Adjacent to the spa is one of two shops available to guests. The smaller lobby shop is more of a tuck shop with beach necessities and snacks, whereas the second-floor shop provides bathing suits, artisanal items, jewelry, and nicely curated items.

The fitness center had upscale machines for weight training as well as the usual elliptical, treadmills, and cycling equipment. It was fairly vacant, but there was a water station and towels on hand for busier days.
The ‘star’ amenity was the beautiful beach.

Although the footprint was not large, there was still plenty of room to relax. There were umbrellas and lounge chairs, with the security detail helping out with setting up your space. The beach bar is close by, with service provided on the beach itself. If you wanted to avoid the sand and the wind, you can always sit by the pool.
Pool – Santa Marta Marriott Playa Dormida –
Even though it was large (comparatively speaking, the Courtyard pool was longer), there was plenty of seating, though it was all filled up when I arrived mid-afternoon. I did enjoy a cocktail and a lovely shrimp cocktail salad. No question; when you are this close to the sea, the only thing you should be ordering is ceviche and seafood dishes.
Day trips and local exploration

The location of the Santa Marta Marriott Playa Dormida is ideal for exploring the Sierra Nevada region; whether you decided on a day excursion to Tayrona National Nature Park, or more in-depth Indigenous tours of the ancestral lands of the Kuntusama, a magical journey through the Macondo Labyrinth, a Panoramic Bus city tour of the Santa Marta or a unique experience at La Cefisheria (have you ever tasted lionfish ceviche?)
Overall Recommendation
If you are looking for a budget stay with minimal amenities, this is not the property for you. This premium Marriott resort is not ranked as ‘luxury’, but they measure as one (noted by the hotel’s GM), and I would have to agree. The service was exceptional, with the Colombian warmth that the Costenos are known for—friendly, happy, and always helpful. This location is ideal for those looking to simply relax at the beach or by the pool. The city center is about 40 minutes away, but the concierge is able to make arrangements to get you into town.
