Location and History
Nestled directly between Ballyshannon and Donegal Town on the expansive Blue Flag sands of Rossnowlagh Beach in County Donegal, the Sandhouse Hotel & Marine Therapies commands a dramatic oceanfront location along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. This coastal manor house hotel serves as an ideal base for surfing enthusiasts, scenic walks at sunset, or day trips to Donegal and Glenveagh National Park. It blends serene beachfront relaxation with easy access to the region’s breathtaking beauty.

The Sandhouse began as a family inn and pub in 1857, handed down through generations, until the economic downturn in 2009. In 2012, then-general manager Paul Diver scooped it up at auction for €650,000—saving jobs and its storied legacy. This subsequently drew the attention of the New York Times because the hotel cost less than a New York City apartment. Some of the most captivating mementos are the newspaper clippings proudly displayed in the lobby.

As a member of Original Irish Hotels—a curated collection of historic castles, charming manor houses, and unique urban hotels—the Sandhouse Hotel earns its 4-star stature primarily through its unbeatable beachfront perch and its award-winning restaurant rather than lavish modern amenities.
Accommodation and Room Features
The Sandhouse Hotel offers 50 uniquely decorated en-suite rooms varying in size and on different floors, with both ocean views and views inland towards the village and hill. Our bedroom was a large Superior Room on the top floor at the back of the hotel, delivering a spectacular view of Donegal Bay.
Room categories include Double Standard/Twin with hill views, Superior Sea View (double and twin) with panoramic views, Single Twin, and Family options. Some of the rooms offer four-poster beds. Room rates are €240-305 during the shoulder season.
Check rates online at Expedia, Booking.com, Agoda.com, or Hotels.com.

I had a peek at a few hill-view rooms, and these were more modest in size and would not likely be accessible, as there are short steps in the narrow hall. There is a compact elevator to access higher floors as well as a grand stairway.
All rooms have free WiFi, a flat-screen TV, a tea/coffee station, a direct-dial telephone, a hairdryer, an iron/ironing board, a desk, and recycling options. There are no in-room safety deposit boxes, but they are available at reception.
The room was furnished with antiques and was charming. Although some may consider the decor dated, this is what you would expect in a classic manor stay. The sound of the ocean cannot be beat and the view from our windows was lovely.
Amenities
The marine spa specializes in baths, massages, body scrubs, and traditional spa treatments. They include local Atlantic ingredients for relaxation and wellness. There is no pool or gym.

A conservatory or front foyer faces the road and hill, not the sea, providing a quiet space for reading or enjoying cocktails from the adjacent lobby bar. The seating area has a fireplace and comfy sofas to read the dailies (inquire at reception).

There is a quiet outdoor deck or terrace at the back of the property overlooking the beach and ocean, a sanctuary to take in the spectacular sunsets, watch a surfing lesson in progress, or listen to the ocean’s gentle waves. I would imagine this would be an ideal spot to watch storms coming in from the wild Atlantic.
Dining
There are three options for meals at the hotel. The Glasshouse Restaurant serves as a breakfast nook in the morning and then serves an excellent meal in the evening.

The Durnish Bar, just off the lobby, is more of an intimate pub with TVs to watch sports or to pick up a Guinness or cocktail to enjoy in the front foyer or lobby.

The Surfers Bar is a seasonal restaurant with outdoor seating facing the ocean. It was already closed for the season when we visited, though it was busy during the summer months.
Why Go To County Donegal
Staying at the Sandhouse Hotel on Rossnowlagh Beach puts you right on the edge of land and sea. From this base in south Donegal, you can day-trip to Sliabh Liag (Slieve League—cliffs 3x higher than the Cliffs of Moher), Glenveagh National Park, Glenveagh Castle, Fanad Head Lighthouse, and Horn Head Trail. It ties perfectly into my 5-day Donegal road trip itinerary.

Overall Recommendation
If you are looking for a perfect beach location, you cannot go wrong with the Sandhouse Hotel and Marine Therapies. If you are looking to continue a wellness option, the seaweed treatments are unique. What this hotel wants in modern upscale luxury, it makes up for in historic charm.
