The “Historic Center of Mexico City” is a visual feast of stunning Spanish Colonial architecture. With more than 1,500 historic buildings, it is fitting that it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I headed into the mix of this vibrant, lively city for a one-night stay at the Hotel Punto MX. The hotel, located in the midst of this bounty of beauty, was a perfect landing spot before my next-day bus trip to Cuernavaca.

Hotel Punto MX, Mexico City

Easy to Get To Hotel Punto MX

I arrived at Hotel Punto MX from the airport in a taxi, a seamless process of paying for the fare from a taxi company kiosk right past baggage claim. Each taxi company has a designated waiting line spot right outside the airport doors. For someone whose Spanish is rusty, I found the process super simple. The taxi driver dropped me off at the hotel‘s front door.

Punto Hotel MX, Mexico City restaurant

Shouldered between a mix of buildings with modern and original facades, Hotel Punto MX offers a contemporary, Art Deco inspired respite from Mexico City’s bustle. The staff greeted me warmly at the check-in counter that doubles as the entrance to the restaurant on the 1st floor.

At one time, this building was gutted to create the hotel. The result is an aesthetically pleasing combination of stone, glass, brick, wood, and metal.

An elevator and stairs lead to each floor, an open concept design, and an atrium. The result is a blend of light and geometric shapes with railings, hotel room doors, and windows incorporated into the pattern of squares and rectangles. Even hotel room door numbers are Art Deco inspired.

A Mix of Modern Comfort and Artistic Design in Mexico City

Punto Hotel MX guest room in Mexico City

My Deluxe Queen room with its queen platform bed was perfect. With its Art Deco-inspired wood headboard that reminded me a bit of the beginning of a Louise Nevelson sculpture, the room had all I needed for a comfortable stay.

Although the window opened to the hallway instead of to the outside, I didn’t feel closed in.  Modern lighting, the white cotton duvet bedspread, and the light wood desk and side tables helped to create a sense of space. And the blue throw and accent pillow added to the room’s pleasing aesthetic.

The refrigerator, built in wardrobe, luggage rack and sleek hooks on the wall are well-placed. I made use of the small safe in the wardrobe to keep an extra credit card. When I couldn’t remember the combination, one of the staff did come to help me open it.

Punto Hotel Bathroom, Mexico City

Like the rest of the room, the bathroom was lovely mix of textures of exposed brick, stone and wood. The modern, porcelain countertop sink, walk-in shower and shelves for fluffy towels monogramed with Hotel Punto MX create a functional space with an artistic flair. High end bath amenities, a hair dryer, free Wi-Fi and a coffee maker are included with each room.

The Included Buffet Breakfast

The Hotel Punto MX included breakfast buffet is a splendid combination of Mexican flavors with traditional items and a robust mix of pastries and salad items. I’m a fan of green salsa and was happy to see it included. The waiter lived in the United States for a while and was interested in chatting a bit about his experiences and finding out a bit about my life and travels.

Location, Location, Location

Hotel Punto MX’s location is a perfect hub for exploring several of Mexico City’s must-sees. After I checked in, I took in the gorgeous architecture including a stop in the Metropolitan Cathedral and a bit of the nightlife close to the hotel before tucking in for the evening. There is much to see within walking distance.

Palacio Del Bellas Artes, Mexico City

In the morning I headed the few blocks to Palacio Del Bellas Artes to take in the Diego Rivera murals and the surrounding park.

My stay in Mexico City was just a glimpse of the splendor that is worth exploring. Mexico is on the top of my must- return-to-for-more destination list. Punto Hotel MX is certainly a worthy landing spot.

I booked my room on Hotels.com for approximately $90.00. Other rooms include Deluxe Double with two double beds to a Master Suite. Punto Hotel MX’s concierge helped me book a taxi to the bus station for my Cuernavaca adventure.
