Hotel Boutique Maribel: A Charming Stay in Alquézar, Spain

Alquézar is a compact medieval village of stone houses, sloping lanes, tiled roofs, and views across the limestone canyons of the Sierra de Guara. A conventional modern hotel would feel out of place here. The charming Hotel Boutique Maribel does not.

I stayed at Hotel Boutique Maribel while visiting Alquézar on a press trip with Visit Spain, and its location made it particularly convenient for exploring the town. 

This is an adults-only boutique hotel with only nine rooms. Its small size gives it a more personal character than a larger property, while its decorative style makes it feel quite different from a standardized chain hotel. It does reward people who pack light, as this 4-story hotel has no elevator.

Location in Alquézar

Hotel Boutique Maribel is on Calle Arrabal, near the start of Calle Mayor and the historic center of Alquézar. This is a small town, so nothing is very far from anything else. 

Arriving and Parking

Driving into Alquézar requires a little more attention than arriving at a roadside hotel. Much of the historic village is unsuitable for normal vehicle traffic, and the road system near the entrance is designed to direct cars toward designated parking areas.

Hotel Boutique Maribel provides complimentary private parking near the municipal parking terraces. At the roundabout by the Ermita de San Antón, drivers follow the road toward the municipal parking area. From there, the hotel’s private parking is reached by taking the descending street on the right. The parking is 100 meters from the hotel.

Public Spaces

Hotel Boutique Maribel has a small lobby but friendly hosts who greeted us warmly. The ground floor of this small hotel is dedicated to public spaces. To the right of the front desk is a small bar with a large stained-glass window depicting a wine glass, in case you need a clue about the room’s function.

Rooms at Hotel Boutique Maribel

With only nine rooms, Hotel Boutique Maribel can give each one a distinct appearance. The rooms are individually decorated, so the exact layout, furniture, artwork, colors, and outlook may vary.

I would like to think my room was the best, especially since it was on the top floor, and it took a bit of effort to get my luggage up 3 flights of stairs. It had a comfortable seating area, a fridge (hidden behind a panel), and a canopied bed. Traditional materials and decorative details were combined with modern amenities.

Rooms are spacious for a property in an old village building. Features can include a separate seating area, air conditioning, heating, satellite television, complimentary Wi-Fi, a minibar, and a safe. 

The town of Alquézar has some stunning views, but this hotel is not directly on the gorge, so the views from my windows were more prosaic.

Bathroom and Hydromassage Bath

One of Hotel Boutique Maribel’s most distinctive in-room features is the hydromassage bath. We stayed at the hotel after doing a canyoning experience and had sore muscles that cried out for this feature.

My bathroom also had a towel warmer.

Breakfast

A homemade breakfast is served in the hotel’s breakfast room. This was a prepared breakfast rather than a buffet and was delightful.

This small touristy city has some great restaurants for lunch and dinner. I would particularly recommend Mesón del Vero and Cueva Reina

What to See Near Hotel Boutique Maribel

The Historic Center of Alquézar

The first attraction is the village itself. Alquézar rewards slow exploration. Its lanes pass beneath stone arches, between old houses, and across small open spaces where the surrounding cliffs suddenly become visible.

Look for carved doorways, coats of arms, old fountains, religious niches, and glimpses of the canyon between buildings. The village is compact enough to explore without a detailed itinerary, but the slopes encourage a slower pace.

Pasarelas del Vero

The hotel is well-positioned for anyone planning to walk the Pasarelas de Alquézar, the village’s popular route through the Vero River canyon. The circular trail is approximately three kilometers long and includes considerable descending and climbing. Sections of metal walkway are attached to the canyon walls above the river, providing a completely different perspective from the viewpoints in town.

Although the distance is not great, visitors should not treat the route as a casual stroll through the village. Good footwear and water are sensible, particularly during warmer months. Starting earlier in the day can also make the walk more comfortable.

Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park

Alquézar stands beside the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park, one of Spain’s major canyoning destinations. The landscape is defined by limestone gorges, clear rivers, cliffs, caves, and high rock walls used by nesting birds. Local operators offer canyoning excursions at different difficulty levels. Beginners should book with a qualified guide who can provide equipment and select a route appropriate to current water conditions and experience.

Hiking, climbing, mountain biking, birdwatching, and horseback riding are other possibilities in the region.

Hotel Boutique Maribel offers an experience that feels tailored to Alquézar. Its limited number of rooms, decor, and modern comforts make it more memorable than a standard hotel.

Travelers should arrive prepared for stairs, sloping streets, uneven paving, and a short walk from the parking area. Those are practical considerations rather than reasons to avoid the property. They are part of staying in a historic hill village where the architecture was established long before elevators, underground garages, and wide access roads.
