Set within the fall-tinged leaves of the Saratoga Spa State Park, the Gideon Putnam Hotel and Spa encapsulates everything classic about an upstate New York getaway. Built in the 1930s, this stately property – hidden away from the downtown bustle of Saratoga Springs– remains true to its wellness roots – offering a peaceful retreat alongside one of the region’s famous spas. Guests come for the serenity as much as the summer amenities. With the Roosevelt Baths and Spa right next door, it’s easy to feel as though you’ve stepped into another era – one that valued fresh air, mineral springs and unhurried elegance.

Location and First Impressions

This hotel reminded me of the grandeur of the Queensbury Hotel in the heart of Glens Falls, NY. Another one of those big hotels whose heyday was part of the Gilded Age. The white-columned facade reflects its heritage while the sense of quiet immediately puts visitors in a slower rhythm.

Saratoga Springs remains a haven for New Yorkers and Philadelphians who come during the summer months for horse racing, arts and culture (the summer home of the NY Ballet and The Philadelphia Orchestra) and of course the wellness appeal of natural mineral baths. There is plenty to see in the area and enjoying a few days in Saratoga Springs is not a hardship.

Rooms and Accommodations

Guest rooms strike a balance between history and comfort. Although some rooms have been upgraded my Deluxe Room was comfortable and spacious but I’m unsure it was one of the newly updated rooms. That said, the traditional furnishings, soft, neutral decor and vintage touches (the porcelain sink to be exact) create a nostalgic vibe. Privacy blinds keep out the cold in winter and cool air conditioning keeps the heat out in summer.  Good beds provide enjoyable sleep and large windows overlooking the park invite you to take a walk on the grounds.

I love how spacious this room is and the view to the back patio was lovely. The elevator is small and moves at its own leisurely pace but that adds to the charm of this Grande Dame of a hotel. There is plenty of self-parking available. Other room amenities include Wi-Fi, an iron and ironing board, flat-screen HDTV, a coffee maker and mini-fridge. There are pet-friendly and accessible rooms available in both a king and queen beds configuration.

Seasonal Amenities

The hotel has a small fitness centre with treadmills and free weights. Located on the first floor, it’s convenient and compact. Most guests prefer to head outdoors. Saratoga Spa State Park is threaded with walking and biking trails, with bike rentals available in the summer and early fall. It is worth noting that there is a $30/night Amenity Fee at the Gideon Putnam (Memorial Day through October).

It unlocks a few perks worth trying when you are there: shuttles to downtown and the racetrack, advanced golf tee times (there are two golf courses in the State Park), Victory Pool access, 10% off Roosevelt spa treatments, sports gear for tennis/putting, discounted bike shares, plus lawn games like cornhole. Another added bonus is admission to the Saratoga Automobile Museum – well worth a visit, in my opinion. Golfers can choose between two courses: the 18-hole Saratoga Spa Championship course and the more casual 9-hole Executive course.

Dining and The Breakfast Buffet

The Gideon Putnam offers a full dining experience in the summer season and limited service in the winter months. Putnam’s Patio is operated seasonally, weather permitting and was an oasis even in the fall months. Enjoy local craft beer, wine and signature cocktails by the fire pit or stay warm under the heat lamps. I enjoyed a beverage in the crisp fall air and loved it.

The breakfast buffet is daily with the usual assortment of breads, eggs, sides, cereal and hot beverages. Although it was delicious, I would recommend exploring the many coffee shops and breakfast stops (Uncommon Grounds Coffee & Bagels or the charming Country Corner Cafe).

Nearby Attractions

No hotel review of mine is just about the hotel, I always like to provide suggestions to nearby attractions so you can plan your visit accordingly. There are plenty of attractions to chose from. Saratoga Springs blends sophistication with small-town charm. Don’t miss The Saratoga Jazz Festival at the SPAC centre the last weekend in June.

Horse racing season begins July 4th weekend and runs for 10 weeks and includes 40+ days of live racing. Rain day or needing a break, take some time to see the very impressive National Horse Racing Museum and Hall of Fame, take in the Saratoga Automobile Museum, learn more about the history of the Battle of Saratoga or participate in the commemorative 250 year celebrations in the summer and fall.

Overall Recommendation

The Gideon Putnam Hotel and Spa is a gracious reminder of why Saratoga Springs has drawn visitors for more than a century. It’s not flashy, but it’s deeply restorative – a place where history, nature and wellness intersect. For mature travelers, couples, or anyone craving calm and comfort, this historic spa hotel delivers a timeless kind of luxury that never goes out of style.

Disclosure:  I was a guest of the Gideon Putnam Hotel and Spa as part of a press trip hosted by Discover Saratoga.  All opinions are my own.
