If you’re looking for a getaway that blends log cabin coziness, outdoor fun, and the feeling of being wrapped in a family’s genuine warmth, Domaine Valga is your spot. I spent four delightful nights here, and let me tell you—this is the kind of place that turns even the busiest traveler into a diehard fan of slow mornings, lakeside bonfires, and star-filled skies.

Arrival: A True Escape into Nature

Tucked in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region near Rimouski, Domaine Valga feels worlds away from city noise but is easy to reach by car. The drive in—up a gravel road winding through thick woods—sets the tone for what’s to come. Just as dusk fell, my family had a postcard-Quebec moment: a young moose ambled across our path, leaving us gasping with delight. It stuck with us for the rest of our stay.

Once you’ve parked and checked in, the main lodge draws you in with its soaring log beams and a fireplace made for relaxing and swapping travel tales. The EV charging station might surprise you—modern touches are tucked everywhere.

Cabins: Log Cabins with Thoughtful Touches

Domaine Valga comprises 165 hectares, surrounding fish-filled Lac des Frères, a 9-bedroom log lodge and 3 log cabins. What makes Domaine Valga special is its collection of handcrafted log cabins—built from timber harvested right on the property by the Gagné family themselves.

These are far more than simple shelters: each one is a comfortable retreat, with a fully equipped kitchen, bright living spaces, and bedrooms that are both rustic and restful. We loved our ground-floor room ensuite bath and a forest view! The upstairs rooms setup was perfect for our adult kids with plenty of room and bathroom.  The view from these rooms was outstanding.

There’s a wood stove for chilly evenings, large windows that practically invite nature inside, and a deck that became our favorite spot for coffee and quiet mornings. Pet owners rejoice—some cabins are pet-friendly, and there’s plenty of space for everyone to relax.

Main Lodge & Dining: Home-Cooked Fare and Regional Flavors

Prefer to let someone else handle the meals? The main lodge offers rooms (some with private bathrooms), cozy common areas, and hearty breakfasts showcasing local ingredients. Dinners are available with a reservation—especially irresistible in winter after a day snowmobiling. During the high season, there’s even a Cabane à Sucre (sugar shack) right on the property, so you can savor maple treats made from trees just steps away.

When staying in a cabin, we loved gathering in the large dining hall for cards or music after a homemade dinner. There’s always a sense of community, but the woods outside pull you back just as quickly for a peaceful lakeside stroll.

Adventure Awaits: Activities Year-Round

This is a place where you can choose your speed—quiet mornings on the dock or adrenaline-pumping afternoons above the treetops. The Forêt de Maître Corbeau adventure park is a huge draw: 94 aerial bridges, challenging rope elements, and speedy zip lines thread through a pristine old-growth forest. My family raved about the thrill (I may have stuck to cheering and photos).

On the lake, there’s everything for water lovers—canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, even a dock for swimming and morning reflection. Fall is a riot of color (absolutely worth planning your visit around), and winter ushers in snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing with trails right off the property.

If you’re into wildlife, keep your camera handy for moose or deer sightings, plus the early morning songbird chorus. The property feels alive—with nature and the laughter of guests.

Genuine Gagné Family Hospitality

This is what brings guests back, year after year. Owners Éric Gagné and Chantal Vallée, and their children Catherine, and Maxime Gagné are the heart of Domaine Valga. Whether they’re sharing tips for a local hike, helping you spot a hidden waterfall, or making sure your needs are met before you even ask, they go above and beyond. Their pride in the land and commitment to guest comfort creates an atmosphere that feels both professional and like you’re visiting old friends.
