On my latest trip to Fredericton, I stayed at the Delta Hotels Fredericton, right on the water. I had heard about the hotel’s prime location on the Wolastoq (Saint John) River. Plus, it has a reputation for the best sunset views in the city—and it delivered.

The seven-floor Delta Hotels Fredericton offers 222 guest rooms. I’ve stayed at another downtown waterfront hotel before, but this one impressed me with striking amenities.

I walked into the newly renovated lobby, with soaring ceilings, eclectic seating, and subtle nods to the river’s historic steamships. The space celebrated both the city’s past and its modern, welcoming spirit.

Rooms that spell comfort and style

I booked a King with a river view, and as soon as I dropped my bags, I walked straight to the window. The Wolastoq stretched before me, captivating in the evening light. The room felt spacious and thoughtful, with a loveseat by the window and an ergonomic desk.  A comfortable spot to get caught up on emails using the free Wi-Fi.

I stocked the mini-fridge with snacks and appreciated the coffee and tea maker for the next morning. Each night, I sank into the deluxe bedding and woke up rested.

Resort-style features at Delta Hotels Fredericton

Delta Hotels Fredericton created a resort-like experience with both indoor and outdoor amenities. One afternoon, I swam in the heated indoor pool. On another, I lounged by the outdoor pool with a book, enjoying towel and drink service. There were two barrel saunas set up on the terrace leading to the pool. Nice for when the temperature dropped.

The fitness center offered me a variety of options, including treadmills, bikes, and free weights.

Although I didn’t have time to try it, Splurge Salon & Aesthetics sat conveniently inside the hotel. I also loved that the property offered e-bike rentals. People were lining up to grab one and zip along the nearby Fredericton Trail system.

The hotel’s other thoughtful touches included pet-friendly rooms, digital check-in, and a small gift shop.

Coffee, dining, and refreshments

Each morning before exploring, I grabbed a Starbucks coffee and a quick bite at the Grove Café in the lobby.

For a heartier option, I dined at the hotel’s main restaurant, STMR.36 BBQ & Social. The cozy yet lively space served soulful barbecue flavors, with brisket and ribs as signatures.

The evenings were warm while I was there, and it was lovely to catch a breeze at the Drift Pool + Patio.

Colorful umbrellas, potted plants, and bright blooms gave it a festive feel. I wound down with cocktails and pub-style bites by the river, watching the sunset. In that moment, I understood why locals call Delta Hotels Fredericton the best place in the city for sunsets—it felt magical.

Next door, I wandered the grounds of Government House as the New Brunswick Highland Games Festival wrapped up. Marching bands from across the Maritimes filled the air with music, and vendors informed visitors about clans, tartans, and all things Scottish.

Later, I strolled downtown to the Fredericton Region Museum. A Black history exhibit, created by curator Jennifer Dow, captured my attention. It covered the city’s forgotten heritage of former slaves, soldiers, religious leaders, and entrepreneurs. Plus, I learned that Dow also had mapped out a self-guided walking tour highlighting Black historic landmarks. The museum is located in a former  Officers’ Quarters building in the Historic Garrison District.  On Thursdays in the summer, the area transforms into a night market with vendors and entertainment.

A fun stop for a tipple is the Lunar Rogue Pub. Whiskey lovers will appreciate more than 500 types of the precious amber liquid available. A cozy stop for tired feet, the pub also features daily specials and lots of beverage choices.

The highlight of my trip came on the water. Right behind the hotel, Wolastoq Adventures, an Indigenous-owned company, offered unforgettable river experiences. It’s known for its illuminated nighttime kayaking and SUP tours.  After it gets dark, the company sends paddlers gliding like glowing fireflies across the water. Wanting something earlier, I booked their sunset cruise. Floating calmly on the current in a pontoon boat, I spotted Fredericton’s landmarks (including the Delta Hotels Fredericton) while watching the sun’s rosy reflection shimmer on the river.

Looking back, I remember most how seamlessly Delta Hotels Fredericton combined comfort, convenience, and local character. I never felt like I stayed in just a hotel—I felt part of Fredericton’s rhythm, with the river outside my window, the city’s cultural heart nearby, and a staff that made everything welcoming.
