San Luis Obispo occupies an appealing position on California’s Central Coast. It is close enough to the ocean for a beach day, surrounded by wine country, and compact enough that visitors can explore much of the city without feeling rushed.
During my most recent visit to SLO, I stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott San Luis Obispo, located near Highway 101 on the southern side of town. For travelers arriving by car, planning day trips, or passing through San Luis Obispo on a longer California road trip, the hotel makes a convenient base.
Location
The Courtyard by Marriott San Luis Obispo is located at 1605 Calle Joaquin, near the Los Osos Valley Road exit from Highway 101. The setting is removed from the activity of downtown, but it is close enough that reaching the center of San Luis Obispo generally requires only a short drive.
This location worked particularly well for exploring beyond the city. I could reach Highway 101 without navigating a maze of downtown streets, which is useful when heading toward Pismo Beach, Morro Bay, Paso Robles, the wineries of Edna Valley, or other Central Coast destinations.
The hotel is also approximately four miles from San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport. Travelers flying into the area should find the drive relatively simple, although transportation options should be confirmed before arrival if you are not renting a car.
You will want a car for your stay at this hotel. While Downtown San Luis Obispo is not far away, the Courtyard is not positioned for casually walking out the front door and spending the evening exploring restaurants, shops, and historic buildings. Guests who want to be in the middle of the downtown atmosphere may prefer a more centrally located hotel.
For a road trip, however, the location has clear advantages. San Luis Obispo sits roughly between Los Angeles and San Francisco, making it a natural overnight stop on a Highway 101 or Highway 1 journey.
Parking is available at the hotel for $15 a night.
Arrival and Public Spaces
The Courtyard follows the familiar Marriott formula, with a lobby designed to function as more than a reception area. It provides places to sit, work, meet someone, or have a drink without remaining in the guest room.
The public areas have a contemporary business-travel atmosphere. The lobby is comfortable rather than elaborate, with seating arranged for both individuals and small groups. This makes it useful for guests who need to answer email, organize the next day’s itinerary, or wait for traveling companions. There is a small business center in a corner of the lobby and a small glass-walled conference room that can be reserved.
There is a bar with a few large TVs playing sports or movies. You will also find The Bistro, which sells cooked-to-order breakfast, Starbucks coffee, and evening food and drinks. The Bistro was added to the chain after Courtyard’s “Refreshing Business” redesign starting in 2007.

Guest Room
My room had the features I expect from a Courtyard property: a comfortable bed, a dedicated work area, a chair where I could put my feet up, climate control, a television, complimentary Wi-Fi, and enough room to settle in without constantly rearranging luggage.
For a travel writer, that kind of practical surface area matters. Hotel rooms with dramatic decorative touches can be memorable, but a well-positioned desk and accessible electrical outlets are often more useful at the end of a long day. The USB and electrical outlets by the bed are also appreciated.
The room also included a mini-refrigerator, a microwave, and a coffee or tea maker. A refrigerator is especially helpful in San Luis Obispo County, where a day of exploring can result in leftover restaurant food, cheese from a local market, or bottles collected during a visit to wine country.
The décor was contemporary and restrained. This room was not intended to communicate a strong sense of regional history or Central Coast design.
Some rooms have balconies or patios; mine did not.
The bathroom featured a shower/tub combination and Marriott’s 39 degrees North bath products.
Food and Dining
The hotel has an on-site restaurant serving breakfast and dinner, as well as a bar and lounge. This is particularly convenient because the immediate surroundings are not the kind of neighborhood where visitors will find a large collection of restaurants within an easy walk.
Breakfast is available for purchase at The Bistro. The menu goes beyond a basic continental breakfast, with a few cooked-to-order options. Guests can choose eggs with breakfast potatoes or tomatoes and sourdough toast, a breakfast burrito, or a breakfast sandwich made with egg, bacon, cheddar cheese, arugula, avocado mash, and a brioche bun.
Starbucks coffee is available at the counter, including brewed coffee, cold brew, espresso, lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, Americanos, tea, and hot chocolate. Prices during my stay ranged from about $6.50 for a bagel to $15.50 for an egg breakfast.
San Luis Obispo has an enjoyable food scene, and I would not limit myself to eating at the hotel. Downtown restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and breweries are part of the experience of visiting the city. The broader region is also associated with local produce, wine, craft beer, and Santa Maria-style barbecue.
Pool, Hot Tub, and Fitness Center
There is also a lovely outdoor space around the heated pool, including more than just lounge chair seating, a jacuzzi, and even a “selfie-spot”. This is one Courtyard that actually has a courtyard. On a pleasant Central Coast afternoon, this area provides an alternative to remaining inside the room.
San Luis Obispo’s generally mild climate means the outdoor space can be appealing through much of the year, although mornings and evenings can feel cool. Coastal fog and Central Coast temperature changes can also surprise visitors who expect Southern California heat.
The fitness center is housed in two rooms on the ground floor, one with weights and one with exercise equipment.
What Else You Should Know
The hotel is pet-friendly, allowing up to two pets per room, each weighing no more than 50 pounds. A nonrefundable pet fee of $125 is charged per stay.
There is a small guest laundry room on the group floor, which I always appreciate.
The ice machines also include a water bottle refilling station so you can start your day with a bottle of cold water.
The hotel had a recent renovation vibe, except for one elevator to the left of the lobby, which made a bit of an unsettling clunk as it started and stopped that made you want to double check that recent inspection certificate.
Things to Do Near the Courtyard San Luis Obispo
Explore Downtown San Luis Obispo and the Mission
Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is one of the city’s most important landmarks. Founded in 1772, the mission stands near San Luis Creek and right next to downtown.
Nearby, visitors can walk along the creek, browse local stores, and stop at Bubblegum Alley. The alley is unusual, colorful, and slightly unsettling, but it has become one of San Luis Obispo’s best-known curiosities.
The Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market is held on Thursday evenings. It combines produce vendors, prepared food, community organizations, and entertainment.
Explore Pismo Beach
Pismo Beach offers a beach, a prominent pier, and a lively coastal atmosphere. The city has restaurants, surf shops, and easy access to the shoreline. Depending on the season, travelers may also visit the nearby Monarch Butterfly Grove.
Taste Wine in Edna Valley
Edna Valley lies southeast of San Luis Obispo and is known particularly for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The landscape of vineyards, rolling hills, and farm roads feels surprisingly rural despite its proximity to the city. On our more recent trip to San Luis Obispo, my wife and I visited both the Center of Effort Winery and the Claiborne & Churchill Winery, which are nearby.
Reservations may be required at some wineries, especially on weekends.
Best Time to Visit San Luis Obispo
San Luis Obispo can be visited year-round, but spring and fall are particularly appealing. Spring brings green hills and comfortable hiking weather, while fall often offers warm days and clear skies.
Summer is popular for beach trips and family vacations. Coastal fog may appear in the morning, even when inland areas become warm later in the day.
Winter can bring rain, but it also has advantages. Crowds may be lighter, hotel prices can be more favorable, and the surrounding hills become greener after storms.
Special events, Cal Poly activities, graduation weekends, and holiday periods can affect hotel availability and prices. Booking ahead is wise when visiting during a busy university weekend.

Who Should Stay Here?
The Courtyard by Marriott San Luis Obispo is a good fit for travelers who:
- Are driving through the Central Coast
- Want convenient access to Highway 101
- Plan to visit both San Luis Obispo and nearby beaches
- Prefer the consistency of a major hotel brand
- Need a workspace and dependable Wi-Fi
- Appreciate having a pool, fitness center, and restaurant on-site
- Do not need to stay within walking distance of downtown
Travelers who prioritize nightlife, a historic atmosphere, boutique design, or the ability to walk everywhere may be happier in downtown San Luis Obispo.
Final Thoughts
This is not a hotel I would choose solely for atmosphere or a sense of place. San Luis Obispo itself supplies those qualities through its mission, downtown streets, surrounding hills, wineries, farms, and proximity to the Pacific.
For travelers who intend to spend their days exploring and want a reliable place to return to at night, the Courtyard by Marriott San Luis Obispo is a sensible choice.
