Best Western Oceanside Inn: A hub for a Southern CA visit

When a friend asked me for a hotel recommendation for a San Diego visit, I thought of the Best Western Oceanside Inn .  The beach and the San Diego Zoo were at the top of her itinerary and price was a concern.  The beaches in Oceanside are just minutes away from the hotel, and the zoo is not far either. SeaWorld and Legoland  are also near. Plus, rooms run below $100.

For my husband, son and me, Best Western Oceanside Inn was our close to San Diego stop during our recent California road trip. We weren’t looking for more than clean and right off of Interstate 5.

Plus, a Best Western was preferred because of the chain’s “Stay three separate nights and earn a night free” incentive. (*The same incentive is going on right now through August 18)

I wish we had been able to stay here for another day since the beach was so close. Because both standard king and two double bed rooms come equipped with a refrigerator, stocking up on lunch fixings would have been easy.

Instead, after eating a better than average complimentary breakfast (scrambled eggs, sausage and array of other options), we checked out and headed  to Oceanside poolCabrillo National Monument, a short drive away, and then to Joshua Tree National Park after an ice cream fix at Neiderfrank’s Ice Cream (726 A Avenue, National City), a San Diego landmark that’s been in business since 1948.

Cabrillo National Monument marks the history of the explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo who landed here in 1542 as the first European to arrive on the shores of what is now the West Coast of the United States. There are lessons about this slice of American history at the park’s visitors center, museum and historic lighthouse,. Cabrillo National Monument also offers spectacular scenery.  One section of the monument is a paradise of tide pools and gorgeous sky.

More about Best Western Oceanside Inn– Along with a refrigerator, guest rooms have a microwave and a coffee maker. The hotel also has an outdoor pool, hot tub and fitness center.

One detail to note: When you go to breakfast, someone will check your room number. Evidently, the hotel has had some problems with people who are not guests coming to breakfast.  Regardless of their diligence in making sure food doesn’t walk off with people who don’t deserve it, the staff was quite friendly.

*In order to earn a free hotel room for three hotel room stays, you need to register for Best Western Rewards program before your first stay. Our first Best Western stay was Best Western Casa Grande near Pismo Beach.

We never did have a third Best Western stay since our travel plans changed. Stay tuned for where we stayed outside Yosemite–the next to last leg of our trip. We stayed at the Travelodge Yucca Valley/Joshua Tree National Park the night after we left Oceanside.
