“When is the best time to visit the Napa Valley?” As a Bay Area native, it’s a question I’m asked often and my response is almost always the same. The best time to visit Napa wine country is in the shoulder season. After the grapes have been pressed into juice and put to rest in their barrels, it’s time for us to explore Napa during the “quiet time.” Leaves fall from the trees, gentle rains bring life back to the parched hillsides and Historic Inns of Napa ready their stately mansions for the holidays. One of those historic inns is Beazley House, a lovely Colonial Revival mansion built in 1902.
I had the pleasure of staying overnight at the Beazley House in October. The pace of Napa Valley had slowed a bit and that matched my mood just fine. I was ready to sip a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon in the parlor, nibble on a slice of cheese and some salty almonds and linger by the fireplace. Of course, I took advantage of the surrounding neighborhood shops and restaurants before circling back for the evening wine and cheese reception.
My room, Blossom View, was one of five located in the stately Carriage House behind the mansion. There are six rooms in the Beazley House, all with king beds and private baths, for a total of eleven rooms on the downtown Napa property. I liked the option of the Carriage House for the larger rooms, some pet-friendly. The Blossom View room, located on the first floor, opened directly into the intimate English garden with its soothing fountain and swing. If you have mobility issues, you’ll want to opt for ground floor rooms in the Carriage house, as the upper rooms are reached via stairs.
While the rooms offer air conditioning in the summer months, I was ready for the fall change of temperature – however subtle this must be to out-of-state visitors. I call this season “sweater weather” and chocolate chip cookie time. Truth be told, everyday is chocolate chip cookie time at The Beazley House – and boy are they good! Owner/Innkeeper Carol Beazley will give you the recipe if you ask. In any case, I was ready to flip on the gas fireplace and fill up the whirlpool tub for an evening of relaxation in my tastefully decorated room. FYI, there is hi-speed internet throughout if you need to stay connected on your travels.
A heart-healthy breakfast buffet is included in the price of your stay. Breakfast is served from 9-10:30 a.m with an option for a “to go” breakfast if you have early morning plans or departure. Guests also have the option to take breakfast in the privacy of their room or in the garden, weather permitting. Whether you opt for a room in the mansion or Carriage House, expect plenty of pampering and local insider tips on exploring the Napa Valley.
