Barcelo San Salvador – City Center Luxury

The Central American country of El Salvador is a small nation sandwiched between Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Nowadays, it is a country that is reinventing itself after a storied not-too-distant past of guerrillas, cartels, gang activities, and 3rd world infrastructure. However, due to a government-led crackdown on gang activity since 2022, there has been a dramatic decrease in violent crime and homicides. The capital of El Salvador, once considered the “Murder Capital of the World” in 2015, is now regarded as the safest in Central America. 

Like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, the new El Salvador has become a modern nation, with a revitalized historic center, museums, monuments, excellent roads, and thriving tourism. Furthermore, it is now considered the safest country in Central America – even safer than Panama and Costa Rica. As a bonus, the currency in El Salvador is the US dollar.

The Location

Located in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador, this metropolitan area is one of the densest cities in Central America. Because of this, traffic congestion can be an issue. It is also the largest city in El Salvador and serves as the country’s political, cultural, educational, and financial center.  

Transportation from the Airport to the Hotel

The Barceló San Salvador website says that it is located “only 45 minutes away from the International Airport of El Salvador. ” However, be forewarned that this is during non-traffic hours, which is very early morning or late at night. Any other time, especially in the afternoon, the journey from the airport to the hotel can easily be anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes.

Plan accordingly. (Our trip at 8 am from the airport to the hotel took about 90 minutes by Uber. We were charged about $35.00 USD. Also, the airport taxis are considered very safe and can transport you to the hotel for about $40.00 USD.

The Hotel

Though not exactly close to the airport from a timing standpoint, many aircrews overnight at this hotel because of its location, value, amenities such as pool, fitness facility, spa, restaurants, and luxurious comfort. (So maybe this can be considered an airport hotel as well.) The hotel interior exudes sophisticated elegance.

The hotel Barceló San Salvador is one of the best options for business trips, because it is located in the heart of the Social and Business District of San Benito. Plus, there is plenty of meeting space on-site.

Additionally, the hotel is ideal for tourists since there is a front desk in the lobby that can conveniently book any number of tours – from pyramids and volcanoes to Surf City and city tours. (I really fell in love with this hotel).

Ideally located in the capital of the country, in front of the new shopping center Bambu City Center, Barcelo San Salvador is close to the shopping centers Multiplaza, SOHO Las Cascadas, and Gran Vía. Credit cards are accepted at most places.

Amenities are many and include an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, spa, onsite restaurants, generous buffet breakfast (which may or may not be included in your room rate), complimentary WiFi, and an exclusive Premium Level for an upgrade fee.  

The Room

As the first Barceló hotel in El Salvador, the hotel has 205 luxurious rooms (64 rooms with double beds and 141 with King Size beds). Either side gives you unique panoramic views of the city or the iconic volcano in the background.

The Food

A great buffet breakfast is available for an additional fee.  (It was included in my room rate, but it’s best to check as the website says it is additional.) Made-to-order omelets, pupusas (an El Salvador specialty), freshly baked breads, along with standard breakfast items and fresh fruits, offer many delectable choices. I particularly enjoyed the watermelon juice each morning

For on-site hotel restaurants, choices include the Garden Court and Strikers Bar & Restaurant.

Barcelo is the only hotel to have a modern sports bar. Not surprisingly, Strikers Bar became one of our favorites to watch soccer playoffs. Plus, they include a complimentary big bowl of freshly popped popcorn for drinkers and diners. Food is typical bar-type food, with appetizers, sandwiches, soups, and salads.

The Bottom Line

• Barceló San Salvador is located in the heart of the city. Many shops and restaurants are located within walking distance of the hotel, if you decide to venture beyond the hotel doors. 
• Location is very safe, but as in any major city, exercise normal precautions.
• The US dollar is the standard currency for El Salvador, making this an extremely convenient location for many U.S. tourists.
• Rooms are spacious with comfortable beds. 
• Check-in time is 3:00 PM, which might be somewhat inconvenient for early airport arrivals. Ask for an early check-in, if possible. Since it is an extremely popular hotel, chances are you will need to wait until 3:00 pm. Check-out time is noon.
• The complimentary popcorn bowl at Strikers became one of my favorite munchies.
