Alt Hotel Montréal: Exploring hip Griffintown

Pulling into the Alt Hotel Montréal after a long road trip from the Maritimes to Québec, my husband and I were ready for some R&R. We were happy that the hotel was located in the heart of trendy Griffintown, right at the corner of Peel and Wellington Streets. Plus, we were thankful that the drive in was surprisingly smooth—thanks to a provincial holiday, we avoided the usual traffic snarls Montréal is famous for.

The Alt Hotel Montreal lobby is a comfy place to lounge.

As soon as we stepped through the glass doors, I felt a sense of calm and lightness. The lobby was airy and welcoming, filled with natural light, pops of color, and a casual but sophisticated vibe.

The hotel is well situated. Within minutes, we could walk to the Lachine Canal and the Old Port of Montreal. For those flying in, it’s good to know that it is a half-hour drive from Montréal-Trudeau International Airport.

What struck me most about Alt Hotel Montréal was its upbeat design, which smoothly incorporated comfort with artful décor and convenience. It radiated warmth, combined with efficient use of space, that anticipated guests’ needs.

Compact but Delightful Rooms

We stayed in a corner room at the Alt Hotel Montréal with one large bed, and I was pleased by how bright and spacious it felt. The large windows offered an open view of the city, and in the evening, the twinkling lights created an almost cinematic backdrop. At about 325 square feet, the room felt more than comfortable for the two of us. The design was minimalist yet thoughtful, with clean lines, neutral colors, and well-placed accents that made the space feel modern without being sterile.

The bed was incredibly comfortable—firm enough for support but plush enough for sinking into after a long day of exploring. I loved the small table and bench by the window; we used it for a late-night snack one evening and for sipping coffee while people-watching below in the morning.

The bathroom had a rainfall shower that felt luxurious. Some rooms in the Alt Hotel Montréal also come with bathtubs if that’s your fancy.

For families, the reservation clerk told me the rooms with two beds were a practical choice. They offered a little more room for two adults and two children. The standard rooms with one bed are more compact at 250 square feet, ideal for solo travelers or couples on the go.

Amenities at the Alt Hotel Montréal

Each room is equipped with a Nespresso machine, a mini-fridge, an HD television with Chromecast, and a small table and bench. I especially loved that guests could request yoga mats—a thoughtful touch for anyone wanting to stretch or do a light workout in their room. Plus, Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, and the gym is open 24/7.

A unique offering is the 7th-floor terrace, a covered space with stunning city views that can be booked for private events. I walked up one afternoon to take in the scenery, and I can see why it’s such a popular spot for gatherings.

A Brand with Snacks, Baristas, and its own Beer

A convenient feature of Alt Hotel Montréal, especially when the tummy’s grumbling, was the Altcetera counter. It was open all day and offered a selection of grab-and-go snacks. These included yogurt parfaits and fresh juices—handy for fueling up when your energy ebbs.

At breakfast, for a fee, you could indulge in a spread of bagels with cream cheese, croissants, and hard-boiled eggs in the lobby. In addition, there was Greek yogurt, oatmeal, breakfast bars, and smoothies. By the reception desk, a coffee bar brewed up cappuccinos, espressos, lattes, and tea.

In the evening, the check-in counter turned into a spot for ordering alcoholic drinks, including cider, local beer (yes, the hotel even has its own brew), and seasonal cocktails. It made for a cozy nightcap either in the lobby or back in the room.

For more substantial dining, Zibo, a restaurant next door, offered bistro cuisine with an outdoor patio and bar. We found the front desk staff were also great at suggesting other Griffintown restaurants or café options.
