Ocean Dreams at Alaia Belize

I check into Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection, Marriott’s first hotel in Belize, for rooftop swims, reef adventures, spacious suites, and a front-row seat to Ambergris Caye’s colorful island life.

 

There are quicker ways to arrive at a Caribbean resort. There are certainly quieter ways. But as my small propeller plane skims over Belize’s coastline, I press my face to the window and watch the Caribbean Sea switch from turquoise to sapphire to shades of blue that appear to have been invented solely to make the rest of the world jealous.

I am flying to Alaia Belize, Autograph Collection, Marriott International’s first hotel in Belize, and a polished oceanfront resort on Ambergris Caye. The island is Belize’s largest, its most popular tourism hub, and the gateway to some of the country’s most spectacular diving, snorkeling, and sailing.

Within minutes of landing at San Pedro Airport, I am in a cool resort transfer, watching island life flicker past the window: children in school uniforms, roadside fruit stands, sun-drowsy dogs, colorful cottages, and golf carts loaded with luggage, groceries, and, presumably, every other essential of Caribbean living. Cars exist on Ambergris Caye. Golf carts, however, are clearly the local royalty.

When I arrive at Alaia Belize, I walk into the breezy lobby and feel the outside world disappear. Deadlines, inboxes, and the mildly threatening pile of laundry waiting at home are suddenly someone else’s problem. I have checked into island life.

Location, Location, Location

Ambergris Caye is best known for its proximity to the Belize Barrier Reef, the largest barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere. The reef is part of Belize’s UNESCO World Heritage-listed Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, and it is why divers, snorkellers, and sea-loving travelers keep returning.

Alaia Belize sits on the southern edge of San Pedro, the main town on Ambergris Caye. The resort is close enough to town for a golf-cart ride to beach bars, local restaurants, and mom-and-pop shops, but removed enough to deliver a proper resort escape. Alaia’s private dock makes it easy to leave the pool chair behind—temporarily, naturally—and head out to Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Shark Ray Alley, and other reef sites. Divers can also arrange longer excursions to the Great Blue Hole, Belize’s legendary offshore sinkhole. It is an early start and a full-day commitment, but few dive stories have quite the same bragging rights.

The hotel is oceanfront, although guests should know that it is not a traditional walk straight into the sea beach resort. A seawall protects the shoreline, and sea conditions can vary. There is a sandy waterfront lined with loungers and palapas, but guests craving calm, clear swimming water should add Secret Beach to their Ambergris Caye itinerary.

My First Impressions of Alaia Belize

Alaia Belize is not one of those resorts that scream for attention. It does something smarter. It lets the sea, the palms, and the island’s natural rhythm do the talking, then quietly adds stylish suites, a knockout pool scene, and enough dining options to make leaving the property surprisingly difficult.

The resort has two distinct personalities. The Reef House is the original, lower-rise side of the property. With whitewashed villas, landscaped gardens, and multi-bedroom layouts, it feels residential and relaxed. This is where families, groups, and travelers seeking more privacy can settle into a villa-style Belize holiday, complete with room to gather, spread out, and avoid fighting over one bathroom.

Then there is Vista, the newer, more contemporary side of Alaia Belize. Here, the architecture rises higher, the interiors are sleek, and the atmosphere feels more like a Caribbean condo escape with a strong design sensibility. It is modern but not overly formal.

Bragging Rights for Alaia Belize

• Charming San Pedro, see it before the town gets gentrified. A slice of island-living where the scooters and golf carts outnumber cars, and where roosters cackle, and wooden beach huts morph into chilled beach bars that seem to always stay open—NOW is the time to go!

Rooms and Suites and Alaia Belize

I check into a one-bedroom resort view suite at the Reef Vista 3 and immediately understand why this hotel works so well for longer stays. Although the suite numbering system is a tad wonky. This 5-story building starts each level at 13, so prepare for a bit of a learning curve as you return to your private sanctuary. 

My suite has a full kitchen, a marble island, a spacious living room, two bathrooms, a separate bedroom, and not one but two balconies. There are outlets, charging stations, and enough counter space to support a laptop, a notebook, several hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and the usual beach-holiday clutter that seems to multiply overnight.

The balcony becomes my morning headquarters. Coffee in hand, I look across the resort pools toward the Caribbean Sea and remind myself that I am technically here to work. In the evening, I return with a glass of wine and decide that this is precisely what indoor-outdoor living should look like.

Travelers who want more space should consider the two-bedroom suites or Reef House villas. These options are especially practical for families and friend groups, while couples seeking a stylish escape will appreciate the Vista studios and one-bedroom suites.

Booking tip: Choose Vista for contemporary suites, broad resort views, and easy access to the rooftop pool. Choose the Reef House for villa-style accommodations, multi-bedroom layouts, and a more residential feel.

Alaia Belize Perks

• OMG—it’s the suspended adults-only rooftop pool with ocean views that keeps you returning as soon as the pool opens to closing time when the sun sets on the horizon, and you are plunked alone in this storybook setting, watching the sky ablaze in magenta and flaming reds.
• Go for the island dining on-property and off-site. Every corner of San Pedro has a story and a flavor worth discovering. The Concierge Desk can easily hook you up with Belize Food Tours, the island’s only sanctioned food tour.
• Okay, so this Hotel-Scoop columnist continues to embrace her milestone birthday. You have to be if you’re in the “Year of the Fire Horse.” At Alaia Belize, guests can arrange for custom in-room décor for special occasions.  On my visit, there were several hen parties with celebratory decorations strewn porch-side, and as for myself, well, let’s just say the luxe accommodation was enough confectionery on its own.
• For fitness fans, head to the state-of-the-art fitness center, which is conveniently located in the K’ian Spa and Wellness Center building. Plenty of free-style and other weight systems, including cycling, treadmills, and a water station for necessary hydration.

 

Diving and Snorkeling at Alaia, Belize

Belize is a dream destination for divers and snorkellers, and Alaia Belize makes getting on the water easy.  The on-site dive shop and private dock connect guests with excursions to Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley, where I slip into warm Caribbean water and find nurse sharks and southern stingrays gliding beneath me. It sounds slightly unhinged when I say it aloud, but swimming alongside sharks in Belize is one of those experiences that stays with me long after the tan fades.

The Belize Barrier Reef is the country’s underwater crown jewel, home to coral gardens, rays, turtles, tropical fish, and extraordinary visibility. It is also a vital ecosystem, so travelers should choose responsible operators and follow marine park rules carefully.

For certified divers, the Great Blue Hole is the ultimate bucket-list outing. It is farther offshore and requires a full day by boat, but it remains one of the world’s most famous dive sites.

Best for: Divers, snorkellers, couples seeking adventure, families with older children, and travelers who want more than a pool-and-cocktail holiday.

Exploring San Pedro and Ambergris Caye

I know the rooftop pool is calling. The spa is calling. The lounge chair is calling louder than both. But San Pedro is only minutes away, and it deserves an afternoon. I rent a golf cart and cruise into town. Dive shops and island characters seem to have mastered the art of never rushing. Music drifts from open doorways. The scent of grilled fish and coconut hangs in the warm air. San Pedro is best explored without a rigid plan. I stop for a cold drink, browse local shops, order ceviche, and follow the sound of music. The golf cart takes the blame for every unplanned detour.

Don’t miss: A sunset sail, a snorkeling trip to Hol Chan Marine Reserve, a golf cart ride through San Pedro, and an afternoon at Secret Beach.

 

Restaurants at Alaia, Belize

With six restaurants and more bars, Alaia Belize makes dining on property very easy. That matters after a full day on the water, when the idea of changing out of a swimsuit can feel like an unreasonable demand.  Sea Salt and Terrace Bar is the resort’s anchor restaurant, serving Mediterranean-inspired dishes with Belizean ingredients for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It is polished but relaxed, so I can arrive in beachwear at breakfast and return in something slightly more glamorous at dinner.

Ocean Side Pizzeria serves brick-oven pizzas near the water. I maintain that pizza tastes better when eaten in sandals, with sunscreen still on one’s elbows and the Caribbean Sea in view. The Deck Restaurant brings Caribbean flavors and sunset-friendly dining, while Blue Hole Poolside handles pool-day cravings with jerk chicken, burgers, quesadillas, and other essential foods best enjoyed between swims. The Resort Pool Swim-up Bar offers daily meals, tropical juices and swim-up-bar energy.

For a special occasion, I book The Cellar, an intimate private dining room with a wine-focused Chef’s Table experience. The multi-course meal is designed for small groups and is ideal for birthdays, anniversaries or simply celebrating the fact that I have made it to Belize.

At Arlie’s Lounge, cocktails arrive with a dash of molecular-mixology theatre. Named for Belizean scientist and philanthropist Arlie Petters, it is a fitting place for a drink that feels part cocktail, part chemistry experiment, and entirely vacation-worthy.

OMG, hello K’in Spa + Wellness Center! Even the name K’in, translated from Mayan, which means “sun,” hinted that good things were to come. In a separate building that looms like a villa streetside (there’s a porte-cochere, swaying palm trees, and plenty of green that unfurls as you pass by this sanctuary of wellness), I, on the other hand, arrive resort-side to this holistic oasis of serenity. Guests wander past vast green swaths of foliage to arrive in a zone that instantly decompresses. The AC was welcomed as soon as you tuck inside. There’s a long counter with attentive staff ready to escort you into the spa.

The big WOW note is the wall of an indoor waterfall that sets the tone. Among trays of hibiscus flowers and relaxing, detoxifying tea, my next step here was being led by my massage therapist. With a 60-minute hot stone massage booked, my muscle spasms ease, anxiety is calmed, and the feeling of renewal replaces all the old inhibitions. Audinette was a grand master of relaxation, using her strength in hand motions and body leanings that turned into its own performative wellness encounter. Her massage was the best offered at any beach resort. (And, yes, I’ve had my fair share of resort massages). This one, hands down, was the best, thanks to Audinette!!

Is Alaia Belize Good for Families?

Yes. Alaia Belize is especially well-suited to families who want space, pools, dining options, and easy access to Belize’s water adventures. The Reef House villas and multi-bedroom suites provide room for families and groups, while the resort’s pools, casual dining, and concierge services simplify holiday logistics. Families with older children can add snorkeling, fishing, sailing, and golf-cart exploring to the itinerary. Couples will appreciate the adults-only rooftop pool, spa, private dining, and romantic sunset setting. In short, the resort manages to be family-friendly without becoming exclusively family-focused.

Final Impressions

I have stayed at enough Caribbean resorts to know that beautiful views alone are no longer enough. Alaia Belize succeeds because it delivers something harder to find: Belizean character wrapped in full-service resort comfort. One hour, I am floating in a suspended rooftop pool above the Caribbean. Next, I am cruising San Pedro by golf cart, sharing the road with fishermen, schoolchildren, and a rooster who clearly owns the island. Then I am slipping into the sea beside nurse sharks, returning for a spa treatment, and ending the evening over dinner beneath the stars.

Alaia Belize is best for travelers who want to combine luxury, flexibility, and adventure. It is not the right choice for guests seeking a classic swimmable-beach resort where they can walk directly into calm Caribbean water from their lounger. But with its rooftop pool, private dock, spacious suites, reef access, dining program and proximity to San Pedro, it offers something more layered.

It gives me Belize with a little extra polish—and just enough rooftop glamour to make the journey unforgettable.
