There’s a new island darling for well-travelled escape artists, and it doesn’t rhyme with “shmalalfi.” For those over-touristed out of Amalfi, Santorini, or Capri, say hello to Madeira—a sub-tropical Atlantic beauty with Portugal’s flair, flowers galore, and panoramic drama that’ll have your camera shutter doing double time.
The Vine Hotel in Funchal, the island’s capital, was my island sanctuary.
A design darling dressed in moody hues and rich textures, this city-centre boutique hotel offers modern-day conveniences (read shopping mall) on location.
For midday siestas (not that I had any, but you certainly could), why not flop on the giant double-sized bed or venture up to the rooftop pool for sun-dappled snoozes.

Mind you, when golden hour dips, this rooftop perch lets you peel back the island’s layers, one historic garden or jagged cliff at a time.
You’ll easily notice that seclusion and the city collide like notes in a fine Madeira wine. You’re steps from designer shops, gourmet dining, and the best local poncha bars—and yet inside, it’s all cocooned calm.
This is where au moderne minimalism meets volcanic sensuality. This is where your days begin with a cappuccino and end in eucalyptus steam.
Welcome to The Vine. Let’s uncork the experience.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
The Vine Hotel is as central as you can get in Funchal. Perched right above the Plaza Madeira Shopping Mall, this urban retreat drops you into the thick of the island’s cultural and commercial heart.
Need a bank, pharmacy, or your next designer splurge? They’re just an elevator ride away. Hungry? The side streets offer everything from bolo do caco sandwiches to sizzling espetadas.
Step outside and you’re mere moments from Avenida Arriaga, a mosaic-paved promenade where jacarandas bloom and café life flourishes. Blandy’s Wine Lodge is a few paces down, teasing the nose with notes of fortified sweetness.
Stroll a little farther, and the marina unfolds, lined with catamarans, cable cars, and terrace restaurants hawking the island’s iconic black scabbardfish.
But when you think you’re in the middle of it all, you realize the edge of wildness is right there too. Hop in a car—or better yet, your own private off-road jeep tour—and suddenly you’re ascending hairpin turns to 18th-century estates turned lush oases.

Monte Palace Tropical Garden is a zen masterpiece with koi ponds, pagodas, and tile tableaux, while the nearby Palheiro Gardens overflow with magnolias, tree ferns, and a glorious 38-metre-tall Norfolk Island Pine. It’s aptly named the living Christmas Tree. Both gardens are less than 30 minutes away, but they’ll feel like another world.
SUITE HIGHLIGHTS
With only 57 rooms and 22 suites, this award-winning boutique property maintains an intimate and high-style ambiance. Interiors by Madeiran designer Nini Andrade Silva (yes, she has the nearby design centre and restaurant) convey elemental chic—volcanic stone, copper mosaics, earthy ochres, and moody purples—all inspired by Madeira’s terroir.

Suite 510 is my crash pad: a modern lair with a sliding door that opens to reveal Funchal’s amphitheatre-shaped sprawl. Terracotta-roofed homes cling to cliff sides like stubborn barnacles, and if you squint past the cruise ships, you catch a sliver of sea.
Now, confession: some quirks exist. The lighting system could earn a PhD in confusion—many a night was spent playing “find the switch.” Seating is minimal, so you’ll mostly admire the view from the edge of the bed (but oh, what a bed it is!). It comes with a plush pillow menu. A huge double-sized, cloud-soft, microfibre? feather? orthopedic?—and an extra duvet if you fancy burrowing.
Two closets glow with interior lights. Slippers and his-and-her robes hang poised at the ready. There’s a hidden closet devoted to the safe and a fridge, perfect for stashing market-fresh cherries, apricots, and bananas still warm from the fruit vendor’s cart.
There’s a two-seat desk for late-night journaling (or urgent Zooms if you must), while nightly turndown service lays out dainty slippers and deposits velvety bonbons at the pillow’s edge.
The pièce de résistance? The bathroom. Open-concept and theatrical, it features a volcanic pebble floor toilet room, complete with a bidet and a built-in copper-tiled shelf.
The deep soaking tub is eye-candy central—but alas, this roving reporter didn’t linger long enough for a proper soak.
The island kept calling. And when not out in the hills, I was upstairs…
HOTEL PERKS: POOLS, PLUNGE, AND PANORAMAS
Did someone say rooftop?
Up on the 7th floor, The Vine unveils its crown jewel: a swoon-worthy infinity pool scene worthy of a Bond film. Lounge chairs and umbrellas await, whether you face west toward the fort and mountainous embrace or east, where the city hums toward the sea. Order a drink. Dip your toes. Or sink in completely and pretend you’ve discovered Atlantis.
The real showstopper is the view. You’re up here, above it all, with Madeira sprawling below like a topographic painting.
Post-sightseeing, I return daily for a different indulgence: the complimentary spa access.
I step into the wet sauna, hit the eucalyptus aroma button, and let nature’s Vicks VapoRub do its thing. Then I plunge into the jacuzzi, tap the bubbles, and watch my calf muscles forgive me for yesterday’s Levada hike.
Downstairs, the hotel opens seamlessly into the Plaza Madeira—a godsend for practicalities. Forgot your deodorant? The pharmacist opens before 9 a.m. Need to exchange currency or find a dress for dinner? Done.
This hotel makes life easy while you chase the rugged and romantic outside.

Breakfast is another daily highlight. Fresh-squeezed orange juice sings of sunlit groves. Eggs arrive with yolks as golden as Madeira’s cliffs. Passion fruit, pineapple, watermelon, and those ever-present bananas spill from their bowls. Breads are soft, artisanal, and never in short supply.
The cappuccino machine? It’s a Nespresso, yes, but don’t expect Clooney to rescue you if it sputters mid-pour. He’s not here (we checked). But Bella Bella is. This AI-eyed tray carrier glides between tables, turning heads. Her oversized anime eyes blink in approval as she doubles as morning greeter and staff assistant extraordinaire.
FINAL IMPRESSIONS
The Vine is an experience—one that marries city comfort with island soul. You can sip poncha in the market, then steam away the sugar in your eucalyptus sauna.
Come for the location, and stay for the elegance. Explore Madeira’s lush chaos by day and retreat into curated calm by night.
This is a place that reflects its island home—volcanic, verdant, and vibrantly alive. Whether you’re scaling sea cliffs in a jeep, strolling centuries-old gardens, or just sinking into your pillow pile with a bonbon, The Vine gives you the best of both worlds: the hum of the city and the hush of escape.
And like the island itself, it leaves a taste that lingers.
