1 Hotel San Francisco is Well Rooted in the Bay Area

San Francisco has more than 30,000 hotel rooms. This means choosing the property that’s best for you can be challenging. There’s lots to love about 1 Hotel San Francisco, but the hotel’s dedication to sustainability is arguably what makes it stand out from the crowd.

A Stay Focused on Sustainability

The copious number of lush green plants both in the porte cochère and lobby make a lasting first impression. You’ll find hangers made from recycled paper and reusable laundry bags in your room’s closet; instead of pads of paper, all accommodations feature a personal chalkboard to jot down in-room messages.

But there’s an exhaustive list of sustainability-focused features and amenities that might easily go unnoticed. Think offerings such as biodegradable toilet paper and facial tissue, salvaged wood, and rugs made with plant fibers and recyclable. That’s in addition to the expected energy-saving thermostats and low-flow water fixtures that are standard in modern hotel properties.

Accommodations

1 Hotel San Francisco features 200 guestrooms and suites. I stayed in a Waterfront King room on the seventh floor.

The property opened in the summer of 2022, and nearly three years later, the room still felt fresh. Large windows let in a refreshing amount of natural light and delivered stellar views of the San Francisco Bay Bridge and the Ferry Building.

In addition to a king bed, there was a generous sofa. The bathroom featured a single-sink vanity with plenty of room for the toiletries that tend to come with two travelers. Alongside toiletries in refillable bottles, the walk-in shower also housed an old-school sand timer in hopes of reducing water consumption.

Rooms feature a Nespresso coffee machine with biodegradable and compostable pods, though if you don’t drink your coffee black, only powered creamer is offered. There is a small refrigerator in the room, but it’s loaded with mini-bar items available for purchase. Yoga mats are also offered in every room.

Rooms are stocked with glasses and pitchers made from recycled wine bottles and water stations are offered on every floor. I wish ice was easily accessible somewhere in the hotel. Guests in search of ice have to call the front desk and request it be delivered to their room. Not the end of the world, it simply takes more time.

Public Spaces and Facilities

The Field House is a spacious 24-hour fitness center that features an assortment of cardio equipment, free weights, as well as multiple Peloton spin bikes. On Saturday mornings at 9 a.m., guests are invited to join a HIIT bootcamp class.

Both standard and electric bikes are available on a first-come, first-served basis to guests interested in pedaling around town.

In addition to the expected facials and massage treatments, onsite Bamford Wellness Spa boasts a pair of outdoor stone bathtubs on a private rooftop terrace on the hotel’s eighth floor.

Dining Options

The on-site farm-to-table Terrene restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Breakfast is casual. After ordering at the counter, you’ll receive a number and staff will deliver your order to your table. Options range from a yogurt parfait featuring locally made yogurt to a breakfast sandwich topped with cheese from a nearby creamery and sweet potato waffle. An assortment of coffee drinks, smoothies, and pastries, make it easy to grab something quickly and eat on the go.

Dinner is a tasty sit-down experience with a menu that highlights seasonal ingredients. During my visit, the varied menu included selections such as baba ganoush, grilled broccolini, mini lamb pita, and roasted chicken. A refreshing number of vegetarian and vegan options were available.

On a sunny day, the Terrene Patio is an enjoyable outdoor dining spot along the Embarcadero.

A separate San Francisco Health Surcharge in the amount of 9% is added to all checks. It is not a gratuity or service charge; it is retained by the property to defray the costs of providing health insurance to its employees.

Even if you don’t have the opportunity to eat at Terrene, take a peek at the on-site chef’s garden located on the eighth floor. Even during the winter months, it produces herbs, edible flowers, and garnishes for the restaurant and bar.

Accessible Lodging Options

1 Hotel San Francisco offers 21 ADA-compliant rooms spread across a variety of room categories. Rooms are adapted for guests with mobility disabilities, however assistive listening TTY devices are available on request. Specifics on resort areas and features can be found here.
