Along with the brilliance of fall foliage, these are the days of wine celebrations. Virginia, with its wine-making history that dates back to when settlers first made wine in Jamestown, does wine travel right. October is Wine Month, and several lodging establishments have packages and events with wine as a theme. Here are three that range from a 100 year-old mansion to a country inn:
Keswick Hall at Monticello, Keswick: This 100 year-old mansion was restored in the 1990s and turned into a resort hotel with 48 rooms and suites. Called “intimate,” “charming” and reminiscent of a “Tuscan villa” by Condé Nast Travel, this lovely property is in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Along with being minutes away from Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s historic estate, Keswick Hall is perfect for fall foliage enjoyment and savoring wine.
Two dates in October have a wine-themed meal at Fossett’s, Keswick Hall’s award-winning restaurant. On the 4th, there’s La Bella Italia, an Italian dinner with Italian wines. Each wine will be presented by a premier wine importer that deals exclusively with Italian wines. On October 25th, Amapola Creek Winery of California is a feature. A sumptuous meal will be paired with the wine-making know-how of Eileen McLemore, a California wine expert who worked for the winery for years.
Reservations are required for either dinner. For one of these wine themed dinner reservations, phone 434-979-3440. For hotel reservations: 888-778-2565. Bed and Breakfast packages start from $235 per night. Or book online at the Preferred Hotel Group website.
Norfolk Waterside Marriott, Norfolk: The Wine Festival Package targets the annual Town Point Virginia Wine Festival, October 19 and 20. In its 25th year, the festival showcases more than 200 Virginia wines. Its waterside location makes this Marriott a perfect stay for enjoying the festival’s wine, music and gourmet food action.
As part of this package, hotel guests receive one night at the hotel, breakfast for two adults, two one-day tickets to the festival, a wine tote and a wine bottle opener. Price starts at $199.
Use code WN9 when making the reservation or call 800-228-9290.
Goodstone Inn and Restaurant, Middleburg : Until November 18, the inn’s Wine Lovers Getaway package is a chance to enjoy Virginia’s wineries at a leisurely pace and bask in comfort between wine tastings.
The package provides: a one or two-night stay in one of the property’s six guest houses; hiking and biking on the Goodstone trails; half bottle of wine in your room upon arrival; afternoon refreshments in the Carriage House; complimentary full country breakfast and chocolate with turn down service.
Located on 265 acres of countryside in the middle of Virginia’s wine country, Goodstone Inn consists of several buildings. The eighteen guest rooms and suites, appointed in French and English country style, are in The Carriage House, The Dutch Cottage, The Spring House, The French Farm Cottage, The Bull Barn and The Manor House.
Each residence can be rented out in its entirety for a larger party and includes a sitting room with fireplaces, outdoor grills and eat-in kitchens.
